It's easy to learn how to use a computer, browse the web, and use all the applications and software packages on them. More than 1.2 billion people have access to the Internet, but only 1 percent of this mass of humanity knows anything about computer programming. Since computer technology is being used in almost every field; some kind of programming knowledge, or at least an understanding of how programs are coded, is essential. Computer science is being used in biology research, medical applications, designing automobiles, engineering, accounting, fashion, movies, the list is endless. "Even in most blue-collar jobs, you are going to be interacting with computers in some shape or form," says Dmitry Grekov, a technology consultant based in Chicago. "Knowing basic programming can make you more efficient and more valuable to your employer."Computer programming instructions are based on math equations, logic, normal punctuation marks, and the step-by-step instructions called algorithms. One wrong character or punctuation mark prevents a program from running.
- Softwares like Alice 3.0 use visual aids to teach Java, the world's most popular programming language. Another interactive teaching aid is Scratch, a programming language that lets users drag and drop program commands into a window on their computer screens.
- Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs are taught by computer scientists online.
- Primer Labs developed Code Hero, a first-person shooter video game, that lets you write pieces of code to do stuff in the game! So you have fun while you learn computer programming.
- The Raspberry Pi is a low-cost computer, a credit card-sized circuit board, which can plug into any TV and can power 3D graphics and Blu-ray video. It allows you to experiment with programming, and if anything goes wrong, simply reboot and your Raspberry Pi is back in working state.
