Top Presentation Ideas: Use Your Creativity | Self Improvement ...

It?s the first and most important thing for a presenter to make his presentations engaging and catchy to hold the audience until its end. Presentations are used as a strategic measure to explain the goal of whole discourse in a simpler way which is simply followed by your audience. You need to adopt some creative presentation ideas to make it more attractive and engaging to the listeners. Go to AboutTopics.com and find more than 10 000 presentation topics for various types of assignments.

And here are certain creative ideas for effective presentations:

Use of proper visual presentation

Rather than boring and dry text slides you can adopt visual presentation which will keep the audience engaged with you and your presentation. It may include photoes graphics, images, objects etc. Which can explain your target in a fast method to the potential receivers. With visual presentation your own character and style also counts much in making a presentation effective.

Setting the stage

Before starting your presentation you need to set the scene as an actor to make it more influential. You need to gradually tell the listeners about you, your topic and ultimate goal to let them understand the entire scene easily with a positive mind set. They will make up their mind as they may stay for the whole session or leave after few moments.

Using the listeners as collaborator

You can make the listeners rely on what you are saying to them if you think of them as your collaborator and communicate with them in the language and style they understand better. Get them involved in your presentation by asking them some easy questions regarding the subject you are discussing with them. The whole process should proceed in a light environment thru humor and the fluctuations in your voice, which will help in making it successful.

Do not stretch the subject

Always attempt to be to the point instead of beating the bush here and there while giving a successful presentation as everyone sitting in front of you. Tell the audience at correct time if your presentation is going to take a little bit longer time so they may not become impatient. The listeners will surely cooperate you if you may inform them in time.

Final touch

You need to finish the presentation with thanks to the listeners, as a case of etiquette, for making your presentation successful due to their cooperation. You need to ask them to follow your info to achieve the goal you have debated.

Therefore, the creative presentation ideas discussed above can help to a great extent in making your presentation successful.

Fitness in the Workplace

Many companies are taking great efforts to ensure that they foster health and fitness in the workplace. Some are thinking of new and innovative ways to support employee exercise and overall well-being. Sitting at your desk for eight hours a day isn't exactly the best for your health.

A recent study by the University of South Carolina looked at the effects of sitting all day. Those who sat all day were much more likely to die of heart disease. NPR wrote a great article on the study.

Epidemiologist Steven Blair, a professor of public health at the University of South Carolina, has spent 40 years investigating physical activity and health.

"Let's say you do 30 minutes of walking five days a week (as recommended by federal health officials), and let's say you sleep for eight hours," Blair says. "Well, that still leaves 15.5 hours" in the day.

So if we know all of this about the risk factors of sitting all day and the health benefits of exercise, what is being done? Many businesses are taking health and fitness to work. This week we interviewed Gus Isacson, Executive Director of the Central Lakeview Merchants Association. He is taking health and fitness into the workplace by conducting board meetings on the run. That's right, board meetings on the run!

Gus meets with the board President weekly, and they go for a run. When I asked him why they started doing this, he explained that he was tired of the President talking about how she never gets to exercise. They started running and are already up to running at least 3 miles a meeting. The meetings last about an hour, consisting of run-walk periods, and are a great way to fit in daily exercise. Gus also meets with the President of their PR agency for weekly runs. Their PR agent, Kim Eberl says, "I love the idea of a run meeting. Not only is it a good workout, but it brings client-agency closer as we share our hobby together. I hope run meetings replace happy hours."

The co-founder of WalkJogRun, Adam Howitt went on a run meeting with SweatVac's sales manager, Steve Kindred. Running is something they both have in common, and throughout the run they discussed potential SweatVac products we could buy for WalkJogRun. In the end, we ended up purchasing some great race hats for WalkJogRun fans.

There are many other companies working to support fitness in the workplace as well. Lindsey Carnett, CEO of Marketing Maven Public Relations, signed her employees up to meet with a personal trainer twice a week. An account executive within the firm wanted to start a company challenge. Elizabeth Maxim, account executive at Marketing Maven PR explains, "We all have a fitness goal to reach by June, and if any one of us doesn't reach the goal by June, we have to push our trainer's truck around the parking lot with other people in the truck! [My coworker] and I are going to run a half-marathon in June. Having this new challenge is a fun way for all of us to put some more excitement in our workouts!"

Janet Oberholtzer, one of our past guests on the TalkJogRun show, says, "My job as a writer and a speaker requires me to sit more hours of the day than what I would like." She purchased a LifeSpan treadmill desk to help with the long hours of sitting required with her job. This helps her get moving, while still getting her work done!

Some companies are taking fitness in the workplace quite literally. Ari Kresch, CEO of 1-800-LAW-FIRM had a track built in their office headquarters in Southfield, Michigan. Ari's goal is to conduct meetings around the track and to encourage health and wellness in the firm with an in-house fitness center. The track was only recently installed, and already is used by their over 40 staff members.

Pioneering Local News Website Purchased By San Francisco PR ...

New SF Sentinel "Pro-Gay, Pro-Business"; PR Ownership Not Clear

pat.murphy.jpg

Political and media junkies will with varying levels of fondness* recall the San Francisco Sentinel. First an LGBT weekly and then a Tenderloin neighborhood paper, the Sentinel was in its latest iteration one of the city's very first online-only newspapers, and was known as much for dapper editor-and-publisher Pat Murphy's spats-and-cane presence about City Hall and town as it was for its often controversial editorial slants (pro-business, anti-Chris Daly, possibly a pay-to-play political committee, and once accused of accepting money from Chevron in exchange for favorable articles.

Founding editor of local city blog SFist, Jackson West, recalls that back in the mid 00's, The Sentinel was "considered worthy of gossip, sometimes scurrilously so, by his peers in and around City Hall. And in a business where any attention is good attention, it all counts."

But things of late have been quiet over at www.sanfranciscosentinel.com. Illness laid Murphy low a few years back, leading him to pass the reins to his fine arts correspondent, and to finally sell off the publication last month to a public relations firm.

Phil Siegel, of MediaWorks SF, purchased the rights to the Sentinel in February for an undisclosed sum, he told the Appeal in a recent telephone interview. Why buy a new site that some may call a dormant political blog?

"It has a loyal readership, and hasn't been used to its maximum extent over the past year," said Siegel, noting that it went about six months without regular publishing.

Under Siegel, a PR professional for 30 years with clients ranging from the AIDS Quilt to San Francisco International Airport, the Sentinel "will continue to be a pro-gay, pro-business publication" with a special focus on the arts.

"It won't be much on the hard news side," said Siegel, who noted that press releases from Mayor Ed Lee as well as the America's Cup Event Authority and SF Chamber of Commerce will likely find their way to the site, along with news of museum exhibits, society events, and theater openings. Such news is often overlooked by local media, Siegel said, so the Sentinel would be a natural home for such otherwise-lost news releases.

The plan is to post about once a day in the beginning, and "feel our way around from there," Siegel said. "But entertainment-oriented is how [the Sentinel] has been, and that's how it's going to stay," Siegel said.

Efforts to contact Murphy -- who of late has changed his cell phone number and locked down his Facebook account -- were not successful.

Few would argue that San Francisco is exactly media-rich, so another voice can't be a bad thing. Or can it?

"It is ethically dubious for a PR firm to own a news source without a clear general statement to the world, 'This is what we're doing, and why we're doing it,'" said J. Michael Robertson, a journalism professor at the University of San Francisco, where he teaches an ethics class.

For example, whenever NBC reported on issues pertaining to then-parent company General Electric, a program would contain a disclaimer. "The key would be transparency," Robertson said.

There's not yet a clear mission statement on the Sentinel's homepage, nor is there an About page that lists its current owner.

Though to his credit, Siegel was more than forthcoming about his involvment with the Sentinel. "I've been in the PR business for 30-plus years and I understand what's news and what's not news," he said.

"Does it blur the line too much? Well, I think the line has been moving for a while."

This is true, and could even be part of a trend, Robertson muses. "You do need new, creative ways of sourcing the news," he said. "You just need to do it in a way that your credibility isn't questioned."

Which, for advertising nonprofits and museum openings, shouldn't be that hard. So welcome back, Sentinel.

*NOTE: Your correspondent contributed photos to the old Sentinel off-and-on for a number of years, and still considers Murphy a friend. Call us, Pat!

Planning rules 'should unite all'

Greg Clark: "It's very hard for people to engage with the planning system"

Business and conservationists should be able to "unite behind" revised planning rules for England, say ministers.

The guidelines, which have been amended after arguments about their effect on the countryside, include encouraging development on brownfield sites.

They say a "presumption in favour of sustainable development" should be a key theme in planning decisions.

Conservation groups welcomed some of the changes but said they would wait to see how they worked in practice.

Communities Secretary Eric Pickles told the BBC ministers had listened to concerns and had "strengthened" proposals "around the basic principles of sustainable development" - making a good case for the economy, the environment and social policy.

'Golden thread'

He added: "I think this is something that, whether you are in business or whether you are in a green group, you should be able to get behind."

Far from giving us certainty, there is likely to be delay as developments are held up by appeals and by the courts having to rule on a new and untested approach?

End Quote Hilary Benn Labour

Draft proposals, published last year, were opposed by groups including the National Trust, Campaign to Protect Rural England and Friends of the Earth, amid criticism that they amounted to a "developers' charter".

The new framework includes specific references to encouraging development on brownfield sites - a phrase that had been missing from the draft version - to "offer reassurance".

It also offers "five guiding principles" of sustainable development, listed as: living within the planet's means; ensuring a strong, healthy and just society; achieving a sustainable economy; promoting good governance; and using sound science responsibly.

The framework says the presumption towards sustainable development should be "seen as a golden thread running through both plan-making and decision-taking".

But the government said policies such as those protecting the Green Belt, sites of special scientific interest, national parks and other areas could not "be overridden by the presumption".

'Sorely needed'

The framework also allowed councils to protect back gardens, while ensuring that "playing fields continued to benefit from the same protection that they do currently", planning minister Greg Clark said.

The government says planning reform is "sorely needed" as regulations have become too complex and are holding back economic growth. The new framework condenses 1,300 pages to fewer than 100.

The revised national planning policy framework will guide councils in both drawing up their "local plans", which set out their development policies. Planning inspectors must take it into account when judging applications.

Councils without an existing local plan will start to use it immediately. Those which have a plan already will have a year to bring it into line with the framework.

For Labour, shadow communities secretary Hilary Benn welcomed a "U-turn on playing fields and open spaces" but said there should be a national, not local, "brownfield-first" policy.

'Uncertainty'

He said the planning system should produce homes and jobs, as well as protecting green spaces, but the new plans "may end up doing neither".

"Far from giving us certainty, there is likely to be delay as developments are held up by appeals and by the courts having to rule on a new and untested approach," Mr Benn said, adding that this would lead to "uncertainty and chaos".

John Cridland, director-general of the CBI business group, said the government had "kept its nerve" in retaining the presumption in favour of sustainable development, which amounted "not growth at any cost but, equally, not a plan to oppose growth".

Neil Sinden, of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, said that, "on the face of it, it looks as though the government has listened and responded to the huge public concern that was expressed". But he said the detail must be right to ensure that it could be used by local authorities to defend "the right kind of development in the right place at public inquiries".

National Trust director-general Dame Fiona Reynolds said changes to the framework would "improve the document and give it a better tone and balance", but added she would "watch to see how it works in practice".

Need 3 or 4 RPers for Dragon Roleplay.

I need a few other RPers for my roleplay, Marked. I require one or two paragraphs per post; I'm not very picky. I do require decent grammar. Not perfect. Decent.

Plot:

Every twenty years or so, a dragon egg of each breed is found that has an odd, black splotch covering a about half of its shell. This black mark is dull and ugly; however, the parents of the egg are both saddened and pleased by this abnormality. Saddened because they know the hatchling will not be theirs to raise, and pleased because they know that this egg, this offspring of theirs, has been honored.

Honored, for it is one of The Marked. One of those few, few dragons that will become bonded with a twolegs. They are delivered quickly to the cave of the Great Dragon, deep in the heart of the Chirang woods. Here they are kept, though, unlike ordinary eggs, they will not hatch until all eight of The Marked eggs have been assembled, and the twolegs which are to be their bondeds have all realized their part in this hatching and come to take part.

Of course, these bondeds might have had different plans for their life. Chances are, none of them ever dreamed of being a dragon's bonded, and few of them are overjoyed when a large, black splotch begins to form and cover half their face. But like it or not, they are one of the Marked, and, if they do not travel to the cave of the Great Dragon, will be found and carried there by force. For if not all the Marked twolegs assemble, the eggs will never hatch.

The twolegs have come, the hatching ritual will take place within the week. For better or for worse, the twolegs will become bonded, and face all the trials the title involves.

Not the least of which is getting used to this new life.

~~~~~~
There are several playable races and types of dragons, though most positions have been filled already. I only have one humanoid position left (a Werewolf), but several dragon positions have yet to be filled. Please click the link for more information and leave a message in OOC or PM me if interested: roleplay/marked-for-better-or-for-worse/#ooc
Thanks!
LONDON -- Around 11,000 Nigerian villagers who say their livelihoods were ruined in oil spills launched a legal battle?Friday to seek compensation from Shell.
The case marks the first time any oil firm has?faced claims in the U.K. from a community?in?the developing world?for environmental damage caused by oil extraction operations, the villagers'?lawyers said.
Shell, the largest international firm operating in Nigeria, admitted liability for two?oil spills in August 2011. However, the two sides dispute the amount of oil spilled and?the?extent of the damage?caused, one of the villagers' London-based?lawyers told msnbc.com.
At the crux of the disagreement is whether the spills that devastated the area were due to so-called operational failures on the part of Shell, or if they were the result of sabotage, illegal refining and theft.
Farmers, fishermen
Shell Petroleum Development Company?(Nigeria) has admitted responsibility for two spills amounting to around 4,000 barrels.?
However, experts representing people in the Bodo community, a network of 35 villages whose inhabitants were mainly subsistence fishermen and farmers, maintain that amount is closer to 600,000 barrels, one of the villagers' lawyers told msnbc.com.
100 miles of oil: Spill likely Nigeria's worst in decade
"We have urged them to have their expert work with our expert," said Martyn Day of law firm Leigh Day & Co. "But (Shell has) totally refused."
Day said that negotiations broke down last week.
'No need for the legal activity'
Shell spokesman Jonathan French told msnbc.com that the firm cannot discuss details of the legal process, but said the company was dismayed that the case was going to court.
"There really has been no need for the legal activity which has delayed the the payout and cleanup," he said. "We accepted responsibility at the earliest point we could ... there was no need for this firm of London solicitors to take action."
PhotoBlog: Nigerian oil industry photos reveal extremes of poverty, wealth
"Nobody is saying is that there isn?t a problem with oil spills in the Niger Delta," French added. "The point is that there is this formula enshrined in Nigerian law that spells out level of compensation."
Instead of resorting to court, the villagers should have followed the process already in place in Nigeria, French said, adding that the involvement of law firms such as Leigh Day "can serve to delay compensation."
$1 billion cleanup tab in Nigeria oil mess, UN says
Shell paid out $4 million in compensation to victims of operational oil spills in 2009, and $1.7 million in 2010, French said.
Shell has been criticized for its behavior in Nigeria before.
In Aug. 2011, the United Nations released a report saying the company and the Nigerian government had contributed to 50 years of pollution in the Niger Delta that could need the world's largest ever oil cleanup. The work would take up to 30 years and require an initial tab estimated at $1 billion, the report said.
On February 17, Amnesty International issued a report saying that:
"Shell's failures persist despite significant evidence based calls on the company to make meaningful changes in the way it operates in the Niger Delta. In 2011 the evidence confronting Shell was confirmed in a ground-breaking study by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that looked at the impact of oil pollution in the Ogoniland region of the Niger Delta. The UNEP report confirmed that serious environmental damage had occurred in Ogoniland, one area of the Niger Delta, over many years. It found systemic failures in Shell?s approach to cleaning up pollution and rehabilitating land, which have exposed tens of thousands of people to a sustained assault on their economic, social and cultural rights."
Retweets becoming digital version of autographs
Forget standing in line for hours, hoping for a scribbled, barely legible autograph on a wrinkled piece of paper. Or jockeying for spots behind the dugout, on the off chance a signed ball or batting glove gets tossed your way.
When it comes to souvenirs from your favorite athlete, the retweet is where it's at these days.
Fans have turned Twitter into a digital version of the autograph session, asking ? sometimes begging ? stars from every sport for a shoutout. Oh, sure, some requests are designed to raise the profile of a charitable cause. But most fans are simply looking for a little love from their favorite athletes.
"(at)SHAQ the real superman, can i get a birthday retweet from the most dominant big man of all time?"
"It's my birthday and all I want is for (at)KingJames to tweet me !!
"(at)Donald_Driver80 I love you so much. I have a piece of your jersey, I want more. I want(need) an RT from you. See ya in a lambeau leap!!
"(at)serenawilliams please don't let me go 0-5 for (hash)serenafriday RT from my favorite female tennis player?"
"It's almost like capturing a photo of yourself with that person," said Chris Abraham, senior vice president at Social Ally, a social media firm. "For a second there, you've breached their celebrity. They've actually allowed you to come over and take a camera shot of you two together, and you can share it with all your friends."
Now, a retweet might not sound all that thrilling. You can't frame it and hang it on a wall (though you could do a screen grab and print it out), and it can't be passed down to your kids and grandkids. You can't collect retweets in a book and show it off to your friends. And no one's going to pay six figures for a retweet, as someone once did for a baseball signed by Babe Ruth.
But that's the old-school way of thinking. An autograph is going to be seen by 15, maybe 20 people. Get a retweet from Shaquille O'Neal, and you're now the coolest thing ever with the 5 million-plus people who follow the Big Tweeter. To say nothing of the bragging rights you'll get when the folks who follow you see it.
"You can tweet that to your boys. Or if they're following you, they see it," said O'Neal, now an analyst for TNT. "You have 15 minutes of fame."
Sometimes you get even more than that.
A few weeks ago, New England Patriots wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, perhaps the most prolific athlete on Twitter, showed up on the doorstep of a follower who invited him to come over after Ochocinco tweeted that he was driving around Miami.
When Ochocinco posted photos of their meeting, the follower's timeline was flooded with so many messages he'd need until next month's NFL draft to respond to them all.
For the last three semesters, David Gerzof Richard has given his social media and marketing class at Emerson College the assignment of making contact with a Boston-area celebrity through social media. The class picked Ochocinco last semester and, not only did he respond, he took the entire class to dinner, spending more than three hours talking about social media and why he considers it important.
"Publicists and the agent are still very relevant (for athletes) to getting the main stories out there. But now there's this side door that people can go through, and they know that it's there. It's not hidden," Gerzof Richard said. "When you're a big fan of someone, being able to connect with them is a huge thing."
(And yes, Ochocinco picked up the tab.)
Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was this semester's quest, and the class got a response almost immediately.
"We've connected with two out of the three. ... If they had to sit down and call the agent or publicist, I'm pretty sure our success rate would be zero," Gerzof Richard said. "I would never have imagined that the course that took me into academia would, in a million years, have me connecting with athletes. That's the wonderful thing about social media, it literally opens doors that people could never imagine."
But what's in it for the athletes? Why should they be bothered to do something as simple as a retweet, especially when retweeting even one person means they'll be inundated with requests from hundreds more?
First, because it is so simple. With as few as two clicks of a button, an athlete can make a fan for life. Maybe even change perception if he or she has a reputation for being selfish or aloof.
There's almost no downside, either. When athletes begin signing autographs after a game or a practice, it sparks a mad rush of fans waving photos, magazine covers or pieces of paper. That may not sound so bad, but see how comfortable you feel when a dozen or more people are making a run at you. And when the time comes for an athlete to move on, there's always a groan of disappointment ? or worse ? from the fans who got shut out.
With the retweet, there's none of that. Athletes can sit in the quiet of their own home or cars (not while driving, please) or locker room and thumb through their requests. And because of the constant nature of Twitter, no one expects an athlete will see each request, let alone have time to respond to every one.
"If I retweeted everyone who asked me 4 a retweet I would be doing 24 hours a day," golfer Ian Poulter tweeted last month.
O'Neal chuckled when asked if he keeps track of how many retweet requests he gets ? "I've got 5 million followers" ? but said when he's on Twitter, he usually spends about 10 minutes going through requests and tries to respond to 20 or 30 of them.
"Especially if they say something funny," he said.
"A lot of people think they can say anything. I just ignore that," O'Neal said when asked his criteria for giving a retweet. "Whoever's funny."
Rather than getting angry, fans who miss out simply keep trying. Because deep down, all fans believe that if they only had the chance to meet or connect with their favorite athletes, they'd become the best of friends, hanging out, watching games together.
The retweet furthers that illusion.
"You feel like you're connected to them," said Sree Sreenivasan, a professor of journalism at Columbia who studies social media and its impact. "But you don't really have this connection."
No, that would require your hero to actually follow you back.
"That's the ultimate test," Sreenivasan said. "Can you send a direct message?"
Marino: Manning 'fits with anybody' in NFL
AVENTURA, Fla. (AP) -- If Peyton Manning wants to talk about playing quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, Dan Marino would be thrilled to take his call.
And just in case, Marino has his sales pitch ready.
"There's great tradition there. We've had a couple off years but believe me, they'll be back," said Marino, the Hall of Famer who threw for 420 touchdowns and more than 61,000 yards in his Dolphins career. "It's a great franchise and they'll get it turned around."
Manning would almost certainly help in that quest, which largely started when Marino retired more than a decade ago.
From the moment the four-time MVP parted with the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday, buzz about Manning has been growing in Miami - much of it fueled by the quarterback's arrival in South Florida shortly after becoming an NFL free agent for the first time. Manning insists he doesn't know what his next move will be, and Marino believes him.
"I think he fits with anybody," Marino said Thursday at a charity golf tournament. "He's one of the best to ever play the game at that position. So wherever he ends up playing, if he's healthy, which is going to be important to Peyton, I'm sure he wants to go out there and play at a high level. Wherever he plays, he'll be a huge impact for that team."
The Dolphins are believed to be one of the teams interested in adding Manning; Miami plays a game at Indianapolis next season. Washington, Arizona, Seattle, Denver and Kansas City also are likely to talk to him, along with the Jets - the team that shares a stadium with the Giants and Manning's two-time, Super Bowl-winning brother Eli. ESPN reported Thursday that Manning will make a decision within the next week and wants to stay in the AFC.
"I know he likes the weather here in Miami, but I have no idea where he's going to go," said wide receiver Pierre Garcon, who caught 10 touchdown passes from Manning in 2009 and 2010. "I could not tell you anything."
Added Reggie Wayne, who has been working out with Manning: "I don't know. Ask Peyton."
Manning's arrival in Miami doesn't necessarily mean the Dolphins are front-runners to get him. He owns a condo in Miami Beach, where television crews were staked out Thursday.
"He does like his privacy - and he's not going to have much of it until everyone finds out where he's going to go," Garcon said.
Why keep playing?
"He's a competitor. He loves the game. He loves winning," Garcon said. "You can never have enough Super Bowl rings. He wants to win and he wants to keep playing. ... When you walk in a stadium with Peyton, you have at least a fighting chance to win a game."
After the Colts decided not to pick up Manning's $28 million bonus, team owner Jim Irsay ended months of speculation by releasing the 14-year veteran and longtime face of the franchise. Indianapolis likely will find Manning's replacement in April's draft, presumably Stanford's Andrew Luck. The Colts have the first overall pick.
Manning missed the entire 2011 season because of a damaged nerve that caused weakness in his right arm. He had the most recent of his multiple neck surgeries on Sept. 8.
Once the fusion has healed, the bone is as strong as any other in his neck, if not stronger, several doctors said.
"Did it heal? Is the rest of his neck in pretty good shape? If those two answers are yes, then it gets down to `OK, get out on the field and show me you can perform,' because it will only get better from here with time," said Dr. Robert S. Bray Jr., a spine specialist who has treated NHL star Sidney Crosby and Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones.
For the time being, the Manning watch is consuming Miami.
Dwyane Wade reached out to Manning on Twitter, and LeBron James took time in a postgame television interview after the Heat beat Atlanta on Wednesday night to briefly sell Manning on the merits of South Florida.
Will Marino call him?
"I probably wouldn't do that unless he asks for some advice," Marino said. "And he has plenty of people that he's working with to help him make the right decisions."
Dolphins kicker Dan Carpenter said if Manning says he's healthy enough to play, then that's good enough for him.
"He's a great football player," Carpenter said. "I definitely think having Peyton Manning won't hurt your chances. ... Obviously, I don't know how hard we're pursuing him. It's hard to say what Peyton Manning's thinking. I'm sure he's going to talk to his family, think about himself and think about where he wants to be and make that decision."
SK Telecom Smart Learning robots add twist to interactive learning, we go hands-on (video)
They aren't quite up to Johnny Number Five's level of fame and stature, but SK Telecom's new "Smart Learning" robots have something it (he?) never could have dreamed of: the power of a smartphone. The mechanical critters are designed to be next-gen educational tools for our posterity, and only function thanks to a Bluetooth-connected Android handset which serves as both the brains of the operation and the interactive display. We saw the robots in action last week at Mobile World Congress in a few different scenarios: a board game, a reading comprehension tool and other clever learning activities. This is just scraping the surface, because an SDK is in the works that will allow developers to find plenty of ways to take advantage of the tech. The robots are still prototypes for now, but we should expect to see them arrive in Korea within the next six months. Check out a video of the little guys in action after the break.
Lehman bankruptcy's legal tab: $1.6 billion | G7Finance.com ...
Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy has already generated nearly $1.6 billion in fees for lawyers and consultants to the defunct bank.
Lehman Brothers? bankruptcy has already generated nearly $1.6 billion in fees for lawyers and consultants to the defunct bank.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? Lehman Brothers? bankruptcy is the largest in history, and it?s also been the most lucrative one for lawyers and consultants.
The defunct bank?s bill: nearly $1.6 billion. That tally comes from the latest court filings that track fees and expenses as of January 31, 2012.
The next largest bankruptcy, Enron, generated less than half of what Lehman has already rung up: $793 million.
Lehman Brothers is expected to exit bankruptcy protection this week, nearly three and a half years after it filed for Chapter 11 in the Southern District of New York. Lehman?s bondholders expect to receive their first payout of $10 billion in the next six weeks. According to most recent estimates, they will eventually be repaid $65 billion.
Bankruptcy consulting firm Alvarez & Marsal, which essentially managed what was left of Lehman Brothers after it filed in September 2008, has collected nearly $512 million in fees as of January 31, 2012.
At its peak, roughly 160 professionals from Alvarez & Marsal worked for Lehman?s estate. Now about 65 of their employees do.
Though Alvarez & Marsal managed Lehman?s U.S. operations and assets that weren?t sold to the British bank Barclays (BCS) and Japanese financial firm Nomura Holdings (NMR), these fees do not include the salaries of about 575 former Lehman Brothers? employees that stayed on. 370 former Lehman employees are still working there now.
Lehman Brothers? primary law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges is already set to collect $383 million for its work up until January 31, 2012. The firm representing creditors of Lehman Brothers?, Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, has already billed nearly $133 million.
The consulting firm for Lehman?s creditors, FTI Consulting, generated $81 million in fees during the same time period.
?These fees are higher than my model would?ve predicted,? said Stephen Lubben, a professor of bankruptcy law at Seton Hall University. Still, Lubben said there?s no fair comparison because there?s never been a bankruptcy of the size or scope of Lehman Brothers.
Overall bankruptcy fees have been moving up sharply. According to research conducted by UCLA law professors Lynn LoPucki and Joseph Doherty, fees increased roughly 9.5% per year between 1998 and 2007.
It is rare for bankruptcy judges to deny fees or expenses that lawyers and consultants submit to the court each quarter. Between 1998 and 2007, LoPucki and Doherty?s research revealed that only 1.3% of all fees submitted in bankruptcy court were overturned.
Bankruptcy is a boon to law firms. 33 law firms have advised Lehman Brothers during its time in court. Of those, Bingham McCutchen; Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Moslef; Jones Day and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges have all generated eight-figure tabs so far.
After Lehman exits bankruptcy court, its new board of directors and its litany of consultants and lawyers will continue to sell roughly $30 billion of the firm?s assets and move forward with pending litigation. That process could take several additional years. ? To top of page
It's easy to learn how to use a computer, browse the web, and use all the applications and software packages on them. More than 1.2 billion people have access to the Internet, but only 1 percent of this mass of humanity knows anything about computer programming. Since computer technology is being used in almost every field; some kind of programming knowledge, or at least an understanding of how programs are coded, is essential. Computer science is being used in biology research, medical applications, designing automobiles, engineering, accounting, fashion, movies, the list is endless. "Even in most blue-collar jobs, you are going to be interacting with computers in some shape or form," says Dmitry Grekov, a technology consultant based in Chicago. "Knowing basic programming can make you more efficient and more valuable to your employer."
Computer programming instructions are based on math equations, logic, normal punctuation marks, and the step-by-step instructions called algorithms. One wrong character or punctuation mark prevents a program from running.
 • Softwares like Alice 3.0 use visual aids to teach Java, the world's most popular programming language. Another interactive teaching aid is Scratch, a programming language that lets users drag and drop program commands into a window on their computer screens.
 • Massive Open Online Courses or MOOCs are taught by computer scientists online.
 • Primer Labs developed Code Hero, a first-person shooter video game, that lets you write pieces of code to do stuff in the game! So you have fun while you learn computer programming.
 • The Raspberry Pi is a low-cost computer, a credit card-sized circuit board, which can plug into any TV and can power 3D graphics and Blu-ray video. It allows you to experiment with programming, and if anything goes wrong, simply reboot and your Raspberry Pi is back in working state.
Lastly, learning computer programming is all about trial and error. Even professional programmers make mistakes. Last year incorrect programming on Facebook made it possible to access saved, private photos of members.
