Vatican paper weighs on 'Jesus' Wife' scrap: fake

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The Vatican newspaper has added to the doubts surrounding Harvard University's claim that a 4th century Coptic papyrus fragment showed that some early Christians believed that Jesus was married, declaring it a "fake."

The newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, published an article Thursday by leading Coptic scholar Alberto Camplani and an accompanying editorial by the newspaper's editor, Giovanni Maria Vian, an expert in early Christianity. They both cited concerns expressed by other scholars about the fragment's authenticity and the fact that it was purchased on the market without a known archaeological provenance.

"At any rate, a fake," Vian entitled his editorial, which criticized Harvard for creating a "clamorous" media frenzy over the fragment by handing the scoop to two U.S. newspapers only to see "specialists immediately question it."

Karen King, a professor of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School, announced the finding last week at an international congress on Coptic studies in Rome. The text, written in Coptic and probably translated from a 2nd century Greek text, contains a dialogue in which Jesus refers to "my wife," whom he identifies as Mary.

The issue has had resonance since Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was unmarried, and any evidence to the contrary would fuel current debates about celibacy for priests and the role of women in the church.

As such, it's not surprising that the Vatican would challenge the claim.

King has said the fragment doesn't prove Jesus was married, only that some early Christians thought he was. She has acknowledged the doubts raised by her colleagues and says the fragment's ink will be tested to help determine when it was written.

Some scholars attending the conference questioned the authenticity of the fragment, noting its form and grammar looked unconvincing and suspicious. Others said it was impossible to deduce the meaning of it given the fragmented nature of the script.

Camplani, a professor at Rome's La Sapienza university who helped organize the conference, cited those concerns and added his own, specifically over King's interpretation of the text ? assuming it is real.

Rather than taking the reference to a wife literally, he wrote, scholars routinely take such references in primitive Christian and biblical literature metaphorically, to symbolize the spiritual union between Jesus and his disciples.

The absence of any reference to Jesus being married in historic documents "seems more significant than the literal interpretation of a few expressions from the new text, which by my reading should be understood purely in a symbolic sense," he wrote.

Camplani nevertheless praised King's academic paper on the subject as scientific and objective.

In its announcement about the discovery, Harvard said the paper would be published in January in the Harvard Theological Review, a peer-reviewed journal. The journal later said it hadn't committed to publication and would await testing on the fragment's ink to help determine its authenticity.

High School in Less Than Four Years?

In Arizona, hundreds of high school students are now being offered the opportunity to graduate after their sophomore year ? as long as they prove their academic mettle.

As a part of an innovative initiative called Move On When Ready, high-achieving students who prove they are capable of taking college-level courses without remedial help, are allowed to move on regardless of their class stature.

Launched in 2011-2012, last school year about 12 schools in the state participated. This fall, the Center for the Future of Arizona (which supports the initiative and establishes the program in schools) estimates 30 high schools?including district, charter and private?now have Move On When Ready programs in place.

"We were interested in participating because it's important for our students to have as many opportunities as possible for whatever career or college pathway they choose when they're finished with us," Cindy Miller, assistant superintendent for academic services in the Dysart Unified School District, told the Arizona Republic News. The Dysart Unified School District added the Move On program to two high schools this 2012-2013 school year.

High schools, which voluntarily sign up for Move On, agree to implement a high-expectations, performance-based program for every student. Rather than gauging a student?s success by the amount of ?seat time? or years logged in school, the student?s advancement is achieved when he or she masters the curriculum.

At the end of a student?s sophomore year, a rigorous exam is administered. If the student performs at a college-ready level, he or she will be given a Grand Canyon High School Diploma. At that point, the student can stay in high school and take more advanced courses for a selective college process, enter a community college or go on to pursue career and technical courses. If the student does not pass the exam, there will be another opportunity after junior year. The first batch of sophomores to aim for the Grand Canyon Diploma will take the test this spring.

Arizona has been a key state for recent educational innovations. The statewide graduation rate is approximately 70 percent, and many who do graduate require remedial courses at the college level.

The Move On initiative is part of the National Center for Education and the Economy's Excellence for All program which is working to create high-performance high schools also in Connecticut, Kentucky and Mississippi.

?Move On When Ready was created in response to K-12 readiness issues facing Arizona's students and the reality that students need an education beyond high school to succeed in today's global economy,? Dr. Sybil Francis, executive director of the Center for The Future of Arizona, said in a statement. ?The majority of students who enter college have to take remedial courses?courses that don't count for credit. Move On When Ready was developed with all students in mind to let them know what is required for them to be successful in their education beyond high school, and to provide a way for them to get there with less concern about how long it takes."

PTTEP Approves Issuance of 650 Million New Ordinary Shares

The Board of Directors of PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited approved the issuance of up to 650 million new ordinary shares.

The capital increase and the proposed Offering are subject to approval by the Company?s extraordinary shareholders? meeting scheduled for October 29 at the Bangkok Convention Center. The date of determination of the names of shareholders entitled to attend the Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders will be October 12, 2012 (Record Date).

The new shares will be offered and allocated to all eligible existing shareholders whose names appear in the share register book as of November 12, 2012. The last day on which investors may purchase PTTEP?s ordinary shares and still be entitled to subscribe for new ordinary shares is on November 7, 2012. There will be no separate tranche allotted to PTT.

All eligible existing shareholders (including US Qualified Institutional Buyers pursuant to applicable US securities law exemptions) will be allocated up to their entire pro-rata entitlements. If there are shares remaining, the remaining shares will be allocated to shareholders who subscribe over their entitlement on a pro-rata basis for at least one more round. In the event that there remain shares from allocation to eligible existing shareholders, the Company may offer such shares to institutional investors.

The final offering price will be the same to all subscribers and will be determined via a bookbuilding method to help achieve a market-driven offering price. The final offering price will be publicly announced ahead of the subscription period, along with the subscription ratio and the final number of shares to be offered. PTT, as the majority shareholder of PTTEP, will not participate in the bookbuilding but will fully support the Company by subscribing for the new ordinary shares.

Proceeds raised from the Offering will be used to repay in full the bridge financing related to the acquisition of Cove Energy; to repay certain other indebtedness; and for general corporate purposes, including funding our exploration, development, production and acquisition activities.

Mr. Tevin Vongvanich, President and Chief Executive Officer of PTTEP, said:? ?Since the Company announced the cancellation of the last shareholders meeting in August, we have revised the allocation structure for clarity and transparency. The Company?s intention for our shareholders to receive preferential rights and subscribe over their entitlements remains unchanged. The final offering price will be determined via a bookbuilding process, which will reflect market demand at the time of subscription, and will be the same for all participants.

The remaining shares, if any, will be allocated to institutional investors. The management team has actively engaged with shareholders to discuss the Company?s business strategies and the rationale behind the capital increase. The transaction is an important step towards achieving our goal of sustainable growth, providing the Company with a robust balance sheet, and continuing to deliver on shareholder returns. John Terry banned for four matches

LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea captain John Terry has been banned for four domestic matches after a hearing found him guilty of racial abuse, the English FA said on Thursday.

Terry appeared before a Football Association disciplinary committee over charges that he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand in a Premier League match last October. He was acquitted over the incident in the law courts in July.

"(John) is disappointed that the FA commission has reached a different conclusion to the clear not guilty verdict of a court of law," Terry's solicitors were quoted as saying in British media.

"He has asked for the detailed written reasons and will consider carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal."

Terry has also been fined 220,000 pounds and the penalty is suspended until after the outcome of any appeal which must be received within 14 days.

"The Independent Regulatory Commission will provide written reasons for its decision in due course," the FA said in a statement.

Chelsea play title rivals Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday and are due to face Manchester United in the league and League Cup during the last week of October.

"Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today's decision by the Football Association regarding John Terry," Chelsea said in a statement after the four-day hearing.

The 31-year-old Terry retired from England duty on Sunday ahead of the FA disciplinary procedure, saying his position in the national team was "untenable".

Terry had previously been England captain but on two occasions had the armband taken away by coach Fabio Capello, in 2010 after revelations about his private life and in February over the Ferdinand allegations, a decision that led the Italian to quit.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was handed an eight-game ban and 40,000-pound fine last December for racist abuse of Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

Suarez used "insulting words" towards Evra during the game on October 15, with the Frenchman saying he had been insulted "at least 10 times."

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? US Senator Bob Casey (D-Pa.) was in Philadelphia today, previewing legislation that he says would improve laws protecting pregnant women in the workplace from discrimination.

Casey said he will introduce the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act sometime next week.? Today, he joined advocates at the offices of the Maternity Care Coalition, in the city?s Fairmount section, to tout possible benefits for women such as Linda, whose was story told by Gaynell Gillespie of the coalition.

Gillespie says Linda was working at a catering company when she became pregnant.

?Not only was her promotion put on permanent hold, but her employer cut back her hours and never made plans for her to come back to work,? Gillespie said.

According to Dr. Charmaine Wright, at the University of Pennsylvania school of medicine, the proposed legislation would build on existing laws, helping those like Linda.

?For those who need job modifications, who need a voice, who might be silent if modifications are not done during the time of pregnancy, this act speaks for them,? she said.

Casey says he?s optimistic the proposal could get bipartisan support, despite possible attacks from Republicans as being another regulation.

Can You Really Be Sued $1 Million for Slapping Someone?

When an editor of a French fashion magazine slapped a public relations executive in the face during a New York Fashion Week event Sept. 9, she in turn got slapped with a lawsuit. Lynn Tesoro, the PR exec, is reportedly seeking at least $1 million in damages from Jennifer Eymere, the fashion editor, for "assault, battery, emotional distress, slander and/or libel."

Eymere admitted to slapping Tesoro during a heated mix-up over seating arrangements, according to ABC News. But, she said, "it was a small slap. It was not strong. I didn't hurt her, it was just to humiliate her."

Intentions aside, can you really be ordered to pay $1 million for slapping someone?

It depends on who you are and who you slapped, attorneys say. According to John Lenoir of Lenoir Law Firm in New York City, "If it was during Fashion Week, depending on who was slapped they may be able to collect a little more than somebody who gets slapped during an argument in a grocery store." And why is that? "It's just inherent biases. If somebody rich is injured, they're more likely to get more money. They are seen to have been damaged more because in the eyes of society they are worth more," Lenoir told Life's Little Mysteries.

Steve Peskin of Tolmage, Peskin, Harris & Falick, a?New York City personal injury law firm, concurred, saying the amount a judge or jury would grant a slap victim depends entirely on the people and the circumstances. "If she was a runway model and the slap caused a disfiguring scar, one million dollars would be chump change," Peskin said.

He added that technically, it's not up to the person filing the lawsuit how much money they want; it's up to the court to decide how much to award.

For regular slappers and slappees, "there's practically zero chance that there will be an award for anywhere near one million dollars or even for more than $20,000," Lenoir said. "I'd put $20,000 at the high end."

Was the French slap worth it? Afterwards, Eymere reportedly said, "I humiliated her in front of her crew. Voil?. I just said at the end, 'Now you know you don't [expletive] with French people."

Arabs won't press Israel resolution at U.N. nuclear meet: diplomats

VIENNA (Reuters) - Arab states are expected to refrain from targeting Israel over its assumed nuclear arsenal at the U.N. atomic agency's annual conference next week so as not to undermine wider efforts for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East, diplomats said.

This would be welcomed by Western states, which have been concerned that an Arab move against Israel would discourage the Jewish state from attending talks due to be held this year on banning such weapons of mass destruction in the volatile region.

"It is certainly positive," one Western envoy said.

The diplomats said Arab countries would as usual criticize Israel in the debate but, like last year, not submit a joint resolution on the issue to the September 17-21 General Conference of the U.N.'s 155-nation International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Western powers had been urging Arab envoys accredited to the IAEA not to put forward a non-binding but symbolically important resolution singling out Israel, which is widely believed to possess the Middle East's only nuclear arsenal.

They said this would have dashed any hopes for a proposed conference late this year, probably in Helsinki, on creating a zone without nuclear arms in the Middle East. Israel, like its arch-adversary Iran, has yet to say whether it will take part.

In a surprise move at last year's IAEA gathering, the Arab group decided not to zero in on Israel with a resolution on "Israeli Nuclear Capabilities" in what was called a "goodwill gesture" ahead of the planned 2012 talks.

Israel welcomed this as a "positive" development, in a rare conciliatory exchange in an otherwise heated debate that underlined deep Arab-Israeli divisions on nuclear issues.

An Egyptian plan for an international meeting to lay the groundwork for the possible creation of a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction was agreed at a review conference on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 2010.

"THREATENING PEACE"

But the Western official organizing the conference, Finnish diplomat Jaakko Laajava, said in May he had yet to secure the needed attendance of all countries in the region. Even if it goes ahead, Western diplomats don't expect substantial progress any time soon due to deep-rooted regional animosities.

Israel's refusal to become party to the NPT or to place its nuclear installations under IAEA safeguards is "exposing the region to nuclear risks and threatening peace", Arab states said in a statement ahead of the General Conference.

Israel has drawn frequent Arab and Iranian condemnation over its presumed nuclear arsenal, and it is the only regional state not to belong to the NPT.

Israel and the United States regard Iran as the world's main proliferation threat, accusing Tehran of covertly seeking a nuclear arms capability, something the Islamic state denies.

Arab states scored a diplomatic victory in 2009 when IAEA members narrowly endorsed a resolution urging Israel to join the NPT and place all its atomic sites under agency supervision.

Brought up again in 2010 to keep up pressure on Israel, the resolution was defeated after a bruising diplomatic battle.

Israel has never confirmed or denied having nuclear weapons under a policy of ambiguity aimed at deterrence.

The Jewish state says it would only join the NPT after a comprehensive Middle East peace settlement. If it signed the 1970 NPT pact, it would have to renounce nuclear weaponry.

Long menopause allows killer whales to care for adult sons

ScienceDaily (Sep. 13, 2012) ? Scientists have found the answer to why female killer whales have the longest menopause of any non-human species -- to care for their adult sons. Led by the Universities of Exeter and York and published in the journal Science (Sept. 14, 2012) the research shows that, for a male over 30, the death of his mother means an almost 14-fold-increase in the likelihood of his death within the following year.

The reason for the menopause remains one of nature's great mysteries and very few species have a prolonged period of their lifespan when they no longer reproduce, as in humans. However, female killer whales stop reproducing in their 30s-40s, but can survive into their 90s. While different theories have been put forward for the evolution of menopause in humans, including the well-established 'grandmother' hypothesis, there has been no definitive answer to why females of a small number of other species, including killer whales, also stop reproducing part-way through their lives.

The research team, from the Universities of Exeter and York (UK), the Center for Whale Research (USA) and Pacific Biological Station (Canada) analysed records spanning 36 years, of the members of two populations of killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the North Pacific ocean, off the coast of the USA and Canada.

They found that the presence of a female who was no longer reproducing significantly increased her older offspring's survival. In the case of males over the age of 30, a mother's death meant a 14-fold increase in the likelihood of their death within a year. Females also stay within their mother's group but for daughters of the same age, the difference is just under three-fold. For females under the age of 30, the death of their mothers had no effect on their survival rates.

Killer whales live in unusual social groups, with sons and daughters staying with their mothers in a single group throughout their lives. With this close association, older mothers have the opportunity to increase the transmission of their genes by helping their adult offspring survive and reproduce. When sons mate, their offspring are cared for by females in another group, whereas when daughters reproduce the offspring stay in the group, which increases local competition for resources within the group.

Theory predicts that in order to have the best chance of spreading their genes, without carrying an additional burden, mothers should focus their efforts on their sons. This research backs up this theory and demonstrates the extent to which older sons are dependent on their mothers for survival.

Lead author on the paper University of Exeter PhD student Emma Foster said: "Killer whales are extraordinary animals and their social groups are really unusual in that mothers and their sons are lifelong companions. Our research suggests that they have developed the longest menopause of any non-human species so that they can offer this level of commitment to their older offspring."

Dr Dan Franks, from the Department of Biology at the University of York, said: "Our analysis shows that male killer whales are pretty much mommy's boys and struggle to survive without their mother's help. The need for mothers to care for their sons into adulthood explains why killer whales have evolved the longest post-reproductive lifespan of any non-human animal."

Dr Darren Croft of the University of Exeter added: "Both humans and killer whales are unusual in having a long menopause. Although they share this trait, the way older females benefit from ceasing reproduction differs, reflecting the different structure of human and killer whale societies. While it is believed that the menopause evolved in humans partly to allow women to focus on providing support for their grandchildren, it seems that female killer whales act as lifelong carers for their own offspring, particularly their adult sons. It is just incredible that these sons stick by their mothers' sides their entire lives."

Amazon to begin charging sales tax in California

Amazon caved. Orders from California will start being taxed this weekend, reports CNBC's Jane Wells.

?SACRAMENTO, Calif. --?Online retailer Amazon.com has tried to become all things to all consumers, but in California, it is about to take on a role it has fought against for years: tax collector.? The change, which takes effect this weekend, comes after years of bitter back and forth between the world's largest online mall and the California Legislature over whether Internet retailers should have to impose sales taxes on customers. The two sides reached a deal in 2011 that included a one-year grace period set to end Saturday.? The looming deadline has spurred at least some consumers into impulse-buying mode, making big-ticket purchases and stocking up on essentials before the tax collection kicks in.

"Even the mailroom is laughing at me," said Derek Daniels, 37, who has had Amazon packages delivered to his Los Angeles office every day this week. He's loading up on household supplies like trash bags, and on birthday and Christmas presents for his Superman-loving 2 year-old.

"We are hoping he won't fall in love with Batman by the time November rolls around," Daniels said.

The deadline spurred San Diego artist John Purlia to finally buy that Samsung flat-screen television that had been sitting in his Amazon shopping cart for months. He also picked up four CDs, an external hard drive and an oddly decorated $17.99 kitchen cutting-board ? a gag gift for his sister.

"The TV was the motivating factor and the other stuff came along for the ride," said Purlia, 52. "I know I'm going to be back at Amazon before Saturday looking to take advantage of this. It's like the final days of a sale."

Technically, Purlia and Daniels owe taxes on all of this: California residents are supposed to calculate what they owe and send it directly to the state. But hardly any do.

As Amazon has grown in popularity, lawmakers have complained that it was depriving the state of millions of dollars by refusing to charge taxes at checkout. Amazon argued it was not obligated to collect taxes because of a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prohibits states from forcing businesses without a physical presence in the state to do so.

The e-commerce giant said it did not have a physical presence in California because it does not have warehouses here.? Similar fights have played out in other states, with Amazon sometimes threatening to shutter distribution centers to be able to continue selling tax-free goods.? Now Amazon is making similar treaties across the country, paving the way to start opening warehouses and offering faster shipping in areas where tax disputes had previously prevented it from putting down roots. The company now collects sales taxes on orders shipped to seven states, including New York and Texas, and has agreed to start imposing levies in six more.?The resolution of Amazon's tax fight in California has allowed the company to start building a network of warehouses to cut shipping times to customers in the nation's most populous state. Soon, California customers will receive Amazon shipments from warehouses in San Bernardino, which is near Los Angeles, and Patterson, near the San Francisco Bay Area ? instead of from Reno, Nev. or Phoenix. Each new center is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to California, where the unemployment rate is the third highest in the nation.

Its expansion into California may one day allow Amazon to offer some customers here same-day shipping, as it does in 10 U.S. cities, including Boston and Seattle.

To San Francisco product manager Reid Butler and other hardcore online shoppers, that is the Holy Grail.

"For me, most my friends and family, same-day delivery could be a big blow to our retailers down the street," said Butler, 32.

As the tax deadline nears, Butler is stocking up on enough soap, printer ink and baby formula to last until the day he can scan a barcode in the morning and receive his toilet paper that afternoon.

The brick-and-mortar stores that pushed for the "Amazon tax" to level the business playing field hope the changes will end the dispiriting practice of "showrooming," when people browse electronics or books in a store but make their purchases online.

"It will remove one incentive for not buying local," California Retailers Association president Bill Dombrowski said. "Retailers are looking forward to it, but we don't go out and buy champagne on September 15."

Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Baird Equity Research, said Amazon will probably be able to make up for the loss in sales tax advantage by carpeting the state with distribution centers.

"The irony in this is the closer Amazon gets to its customers, the more success it seems to have," he said.

Amazon spokesman Scott Stanzel said the company will continue to offer lower prices, even without the sales tax advantage, and is not worried about losing business. He would not say whether the tax deadline has affected sales.

More change may be on the way. The company is lobbying Congress to cut through the web of state-specific rules and devise a national policy for Internet taxation.

Sales tax rates in California reach 9.75 percent and are among the highest in the country. The new rules, which may affect more than 200 out-of-state businesses, are expected to bring in more than $200 million annually, with at least $80 million coming from Amazon alone.

California's tax authority is preparing to hire 30 new specialists to make sure the state collects the revenue it is due. Jerome Horton, chairman of the state Board of Equalization, said the change will allow out of state companies to "contribute their fair share" toward schools and other public services.

Amazon has been tax-free for nearly two decades; an adult lifetime for some customers.

Amateur photographer Joe Chin, 27, saved more than a hundred dollars last week when he used Amazon to buy a $1,400 Fujifilm digital camera. A world without tax-free shopping will be an adjustment, he said.

Feds demand LCD maker pay $1 billion

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Federal prosecutors are seeking harsh sentences against a Taiwan company and two of its former executives, saying they participated in the most significant price-fixing "cartel" ever prosecuted in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday demanded AU Optronics Corp. pay $1 billion and the two former executives each serve 10-year prison sentences for illegally fixing computer screen prices.

The company's lawyers are arguing for a fine of no more than $285 million and significantly lighter, but undefined, prison terms for the executives.

A federal jury in March found the company, along with Hsuan Bin Chen and Hui Hsiung, guilty of price fixing.

Six other Asian LCD screen makers have paid a combined $860 million in fines after pleading guilty.

Dark energy is real, say astronomers

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? Dark energy, a mysterious substance thought to be speeding up the expansion of the Universe is really there, according to a team of astronomers at the University of Portsmouth and LMU University Munich.

After a two-year study led by Tommaso Giannantonio and Robert Crittenden, scientists conclude that the likelihood of its existence stands at 99.996 per cent. Their findings are published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Professor Bob Nichol, a member of the Portsmouth team, said: "Dark energy is one of the great scientific mysteries of our time, so it isn't surprising that so many researchers question its existence.

"But with our new work we're more confident than ever that this exotic component of the Universe is real -- even if we still have no idea what it consists of."

Over a decade ago, astronomers observing the brightness of distant supernovae realised that the expansion of the Universe appeared to be accelerating. The acceleration is attributed to the repulsive force associated with dark energy now thought to make up 73 per cent of the content of the cosmos. The researchers who made this discovery received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2011, but the existence of dark energy remains a topic of hot debate.

Many other techniques have been used to confirm the reality of dark energy but they are either indirect probes of the accelerating Universe or susceptible to their own uncertainties. Clear evidence for dark energy comes from the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect named after Rainer Sachs and Arthur Wolfe.

The Cosmic Microwave Background, the radiation of the residual heat of the Big Bang, is seen all over the sky. In 1967 Sachs and Wolfe proposed that light from this radiation would become slightly bluer as it passed through the gravitational fields of lumps of matter, an effect known as gravitational redshift.

In 1996, Robert Crittenden and Neil Turok, now at the Perimeter Institute in Canada, took this idea to the next level, suggesting that astronomers could look for these small changes in the energy of the light, or photons, by comparing the temperature of the radiation with maps of galaxies in the local Universe.

In the absence of dark energy, or a large curvature in the Universe, there would be no correspondence between these two maps (the distant cosmic microwave background and relatively closer distribution of galaxies), but the existence of dark energy would lead to the strange, counter-intuitive effect where the cosmic microwave background photons would gain energy as they travelled through large lumps of mass.

The Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect was first detected in 2003 and was immediately seen as corroborative evidence for dark energy, featuring in the 'Discovery of the year' in Science magazine. But the signal is weak as the expected correlation between maps is small and so some scientists suggested it was caused by other sources such as the dust in our galaxy. Since the first Integrated Sachs Wolfe papers, several astronomers have questioned the original detections of the effect and thus called some of the strongest evidence yet for dark energy into question.

In the new paper, the product of nearly two years of work, the team have re-examined all the arguments against the Integrated Sachs Wolfe detection as well as improving the maps used in the original work. In their painstaking analysis, they conclude that there is a 99.996 per cent chance that dark energy is responsible for the hotter parts of the cosmic microwave background maps (or the same level of significance as the recent discovery of the Higgs boson).

"This work also tells us about possible modifications to Einstein's theory of General Relativity," notes Tommaso Giannantonio, lead author of the present study.

"The next generation of cosmic microwave background and galaxy surveys should provide the definitive measurement, either confirming general relativity, including dark energy, or even more intriguingly, demanding a completely new understanding of how gravity works."
