Keith Burgess-Jackson: From Today's New York Times

How aging parents, their children and doctors face?or avoid?the reality of death.

The Letter

To the Editor:

The proposal for Medicare to cover end-of-life planning discussions between doctor and patient was eliminated from the Affordable Care Act, but the need for such talks remains compelling.

In my own experience, not only do doctors tend to avoid end-of-life discussions with their aging patients, but caregiving adult children are often equally silent. When a hospital doctor asked my father if he wanted a feeding tube, he said no. To my knowledge no one?not the doctor or social worker, not my brother or me?ever mentioned the ?D? word. No one said, ?Without the tube, you will die.?

There are plenty of reasons not to enter such sensitive discussions with elderly patients or parents. We don?t want to upset them. We assume that they would ask for details, if they wanted them. We think they know and understand their options, so we respectfully step back from painful conversations.

Doctors may assume that family members are talking about these issues; family members may assume the same about doctors. The subject is so sticky, so uncomfortable, that everyone is happy to avoid it or assign it to someone else.

If doctors aren?t willing to discuss life-and-death decisions more directly and honestly than they do today, caregiving children need to learn to shoulder these responsibilities alone.

These end-of-life talks between parent and child also provide an opportunity for forgiveness and reconciliation. Adult children often find themselves taking care of an aging parent toward whom they feel something less than love. Both may yearn to redress old hurts but wonder, ?Does it make sense to try to forge some type of reconciliation this late in the game??

There are good reasons not to open old wounds with an aging parent. You may find that nothing is gained, and that your relationship ends on a sour note. But when time is running out, this may be the last chance to salve old wounds in a way that?s not possible once that person is gone.

In saying, ?If doctors aren?t willing to discuss life-and-death decisions more directly and honestly than they do today, caregiving children need to learn to shoulder these responsibilities alone,? Dr. Spring deprives the older generation of its independence.

Except for those suffering from advanced dementia, older adults are quite capable of raising the topic of their end-of-life wishes. As functioning adults whose quality of life and experience of dying are on the line, certainly they bear equal responsibility for initiating the discussion.

The responsibility carried by today?s adult offspring alone is to consider their own end-of-life preferences in order to begin the conversation with the next generation in a more timely manner.

ANNE-MARIE HISLOP
Chicago, July 25, 2012?

I am a doctor, specializing in infectious diseases, who often treats patients in the terminal stages. I couldn?t agree more with Dr. Spring about the critical need for candid end-of-life counseling sessions among patients, families and treating physicians. The hyperbolic and misguided references to ?death panels? by Sarah Palin derailed what should have been a springboard for physicians, insurers, patients and patients? families to have open dialogues about when medical care becomes excessive, painful and futile.

This is the elephant in the room that no politician or policy maker is willing to put out there for a rational national debate. Doctors, nurses and other caregivers do not gain anything when we pursue futile care, often in intensive care settings with extremely expensive protocols, because a patient and/or the family ?wants everything done.?

Our collective answer needs to be: ?We?ve already done everything, and now it?s time not for rationing, but for rational care.? We need to face the limitations of our abilities, and the need to let the life of a loved one have a natural ending.

ALAN SANDERS
Albany, July 25, 2012?

While it?s important to start end-of-life discussions, it?s hard to know when to end the discussion. When my mother was in her earlier stages of Parkinson?s disease in her early 50s, she was adamant that she wanted a ?do not resuscitate? order. There was no way, she told us, that she wanted to live ?like a vegetable.? We objected but eventually complied, as it was her body, her wish.

Two years later, her disease had worsened considerably; she was now paralyzed, couldn?t open her eyes, had a feeding tube, and was in a stupor much of the time. Yet it was now, faced with the imminence of death and terrified, that she insisted we rip up her D.N.R. She wanted to live no matter what.

At this point she was in no state for a conversation, and we were left trying to decide which mother to listen to?the alert one who wanted quality of life, or the confused, dying one who did not want to go gently. We ripped up the D.N.R., but as it happened, my mother died at home, naturally, without the life support available in a hospital. Was this her wish or not?

DIANA LAMBERT
Cherry Hill, N.J., July 25, 2012?

About eight years before my mother?s final illness, she presented my brother and me with copies of her living will and medical power of attorney. It was a bit of a shock, but I now appreciate how fortunate we were to have a mother with such foresight and practicality.

Although it was hard to contemplate her death, it set us up to begin discussing the realities. Because of this, my brother and I had a uniform understanding of what she wanted; we had no arguments about whether or not this or that should be done, but were able to stand together to ensure that, as much as possible, her wishes were met?even when it meant standing firm against the doctor.

I suspect that a lot of our reluctance to talk about end-of-life planning has more to do with our fear of losing our parents than with their fear of death. Most elderly people have lost loved ones and are quite aware that death is the ultimate reality.

One thing my mother said that really helped me was, ?I don?t want to die, but I?m not afraid to die.? Because of that, I didn?t feel as if I was deciding to kill her; I knew that I was giving her the autonomy she wanted to die with as much peace and dignity as possible.

MARTHA WHITE
Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., July 25, 2012?

One factor that Dr. Spring did not mention is the different positions taken by the adult siblings of an aging parent. It is often the case that the care and decision-making for that aging parent is disproportionately carried out by only one of the two or more adult siblings.

A tug-of-war ensues, as the decision-making adult sibling is constantly confronted by the adult sibling on the sidelines who carps and complains but does nothing but sow confusion and dissension about what steps need to be taken.

MARC ROGERS
Sherman Oaks, Calif., July 25, 2012?

As the author of the end-of-life provisions ( infamously known as the ?death panel? provisions), I was drawn to the Invitation to a Dialogue about end-of-life planning.

End-of-life planning was actually not ?eliminated? from the Affordable Care Act.? The reconciliation process used to pass the bill in the Senate prevented it from being included.?Congress has actually never voted against it. It had bipartisan support on the committee level and previously in the full House.?

Conversations about end-of-life care should not be postponed until an individual?s final days. We never know when our time will come, or when a loved one may be injured or become ill. Making medical decisions ahead of time, rather than being burdensome, frees individuals to concentrate on the personal and emotional at the end.

We should act now, change Medicare policies and pass bipartisan?H.R. 1589, which provides coverage for voluntary advance care planning consultations. Every person can have peace of mind knowing his or her personal choices will be carried out.

EARL BLUMENAUER
Member of Congress, 3rd Dist., Oregon
Washington, July 26, 2012?

Dr. Spring is all too correct in asserting that the medical community is generally uncomfortable with straight talk about end-of-life issues. Moreover, doctors (especially when the dying patient is in a hospital) often circumvent patient and family wishes. While this may be inadvertent rather than intentional, the effect is the same: The patient does not have a chance to express his or her wishes, much less be assured that they will be followed. So it is largely up to patients, families and caregivers to initiate what we euphemistically call ?the conversation.?

A word to adult children: Before having the conversation with your parent(s), have it among yourselves. You must come to a consensus that Mom and Dad?s wishes will be honored, whether or not you are in agreement with them.

Mom and Dad: You must make your desires and intentions clear, in writing, using documents that are honored in your state of residence. Review the documents periodically?your thinking may change as you watch friends and relatives make their final passage. And don?t bury the documents in a file cabinet. Store them on a flash drive and give it to the person who holds your power of attorney.

Finally, be sure your designee will honor your wishes. You may want to give this job to someone other than your spouse or children.

Those of us in the baby boom generation have both the opportunity and the responsibility to initiate the conversation with our children, caregivers and doctors. Many of us have lived through the process with our parents, and we want it to be different when our time comes. Well, if we want to be in charge, we have to take charge.

HELEN C. GAGEL
Evanston, Ill., July 26, 2012

The writer is the executive director of North Shore Village, which helps older adults age in place in their own homes.?

It?s all well and good for adult children to discuss end-of-life issues with their aging parents. But such conversations cannot replace end-of-life discussions with doctors and nurses, who know about the potential benefits and harms of interventions like feeding tubes. Patients need accurate information about the possible consequences of their treatment choices. Medical professionals are the ones who can?and should?deliver that information.

REBECCA DRESSER
St. Louis, July 26, 2012

The writer is a professor of law and bioethics at Washington University Law School.?

Most doctors avoid talking about the ?D? word because of the difficulty of the subject, lack of preparedness and training, lack of time and many other reasons mentioned by Dr. Spring. But that is changing. The American Society of Clinical Oncology, of which I am a member, has made it its priority to improve the communication skills and education of cancer specialists in ?breaking the bad news.?

In the United States, hospitals that receive Medicare funding are required to ask all adults presenting for admission if they have an advance directive. It is a well-meaning but awful regulation. It is the worst time to discuss advance directives, since it implies that one may die during that particular hospital stay.

The time to discuss advance directives and issues relating to end-of-life care is at home, at the kitchen table, in churches, synagogues and mosques, in high schools and colleges, between spouses and siblings, between parents and children, and, most important, at the time when we are healthy and are not threatened by a serious illness.

Each situation is unique, and each decision is affected by one?s faith tradition, life view, past experiences and family dynamics.

The Writer Responds

I agree with Ms. Hislop?s point that the elderly should ?bear equal responsibility for initiating? end-of-life discussions. But we shouldn?t assume that they?re any more free to talk about death and dying than are caregivers or doctors. The subject is often too toxic to touch.

Dr. Sanders points out that caregiving children often insist on doing everything possible to keep their elderly parents alive. If doctors fostered a more open dialogue, families might discover other equally loving alternatives, such as ?do not resuscitate? or ?allow natural death.?

Ms. White?s experience resonates with me and many of my patients: When aging parents spell out their end-of-life wishes to their children, this is an act of supreme kindness. Adult children aren?t left wondering what?s the loving thing to do?to end life or prolong life?

My advice to aging parents: Make your health care wishes known to your children with the utmost specificity. Let your family know if you want them to level with you about your health and tell you when you are dying. If possible, let them know when you?re ready to go.

My clinical experience confirms Mr. Rogers?s observation about sibling rivalries. This is a time of high drama. Often family members find themselves battling over the best course of treatment, when they?re really tearing at old wounds: ?Why did you get Dad?s business?? ?Why do you always have to be in control?? ?You always think you?re right.? Siblings may need to unpack and redress the personal meanings of these old ruptures before they can agree on life-or-death decisions for their elderly parents.

HBT: Padres sign Street to 2-year extension

Carlos Quentin was handed a three-year, $30 million deal last week. And now the San Diego front office has locked up another potential trade chip.

From Corey Brock of MLB.com?comes word that the Padres reached agreement Sunday on a two-year, $14 million contract extension with closer Huston Street. The deal also carries a $7 million club option for 2015. There are no buyouts or added incentives.

?Huston has done a fantastic job for us, and he?s fit our clubhouse well,? said Padres GM Josh Byrnes. ?He?s about to turn 29 [on August 2]. We think this is a good decision to solidify the position for us.?

Street has registered a superb 0.91 ERA, 0.64 WHIP and 39/8 K/BB ratio across 29 2/3 innings this season as the Friars? primary ninth-inning man. He?s a perfect 17-for-17 in save opportunities.

A weak trade market for high-quality relievers is now even weaker. Tuesday should be interesting.

If I wanted to live in the desert, I would move to the desert. Instead, I get to live in Pennsylvania where it feels hotter than the desert because of our insane humidity.

And although I like the warm feeling of sun on my skin, I?m not one for humidity. I get that from my mother. But I also don?t like a/c. There is this love-hate battle of not wanting to be in the sweltering heat and not wanting to be in the freezing office or restaurant. What to do?

If it?s going to be this hot, I might as well be on a beach. Or drinking one of these.

Low calorie flavored waters

If you?re looking to save a few calories while still enjoying something a little more lively than plain water. There are plenty of ways to spice things up with fresh fruit or spritzes of juice.

Try mashing fresh leaves of mint and add lime and cucumber slices to a glass of water. Squeeze some of the juices from the lime and cucumber to flavor the water and stir.

(AP) ? Apple Inc. released its new operating system for Mac computers on Wednesday, with features borrowed from mobile devices and a tighter integration with online file storage.

Dubbed Mountain Lion, the new software narrows the gap between the PC and phone software packages, making Mac personal computers work more like iPhones and iPads.

It's similar to what Microsoft Corp. is doing with its forthcoming Windows 8 system. That system, to be released Oct. 26, will bring the look and user interface of Windows Phone to PCs.

Mountain Lion costs $20 and is being sold only as a download. Only computers running the two most recent versions of Mac OS, Lion and Snow Leopard, can be upgraded.

Macs bought on or after June 11 can be upgraded for free.

Among the features of Mountain Lion:

? The new software has better integration with social networks such as Twitter. Facebook integration is coming this fall. It has built-in features to facilitate sharing on such services. For instance, you'll get notifications when you get a message or a mention in a Facebook or Twitter post. You need to sign in only once, and you can share directly from other apps you are using.

? Power Nap keeps your Mac updated even while it's in power-saving "sleep" mode. It will get your email messages, back up your files and download software updates automatically. It will work with recent MacBook Air computers and the higher-end MacBook Pro model, the one with the sharper, "Retina" display.

? A new Messages app, copied from Apple's mobile operating system, replaces iChat. It will allow you to send messages to other Apple users, whether that person is on a Mac or an Apple mobile device.

? Mountain Lion integrates with iCloud, the new Internet storage service designed for the mobile devices.

? The software brings dictation to Macs, essentially allowing the computer to type as you talk.

? Game Center stores high game scores and helps users find opponents on both Macs and Apple mobile devices.

PINK FLOYD London - Live 66-67 music review by Mellotron Storm

4 stars I had a hard time finding this EP on the site here not realizing it would be located in the video section. I haven't even seen the video yet and i only bought this for the two long tracks from 1966/67. Man was this worth getting ! I couldn't help but think of Pete Townsend(THE WHO) who used to go to the UFO Club often to see THE PINK FLOYD during this period of time. He loved how dark, psychedelic, powerful and experimental they were live on stage. And these two long tracks certainly represent what he was talking about. Pete thought "Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn" was awful, complete rubbish because he was expecting the same music that he witnessed live not a bunch of silly pop songs.

I will eventually get to the video footage one day but first up on the cd is "Interstellar Overdrive" apparently recorded at the UFO Club in 1966. The intro certainly gets your attention then they get into this steady groove before a minute. I really like the organ here. Experimental sounds after 5 minutes then the organ and guitar turn aggressive before 7 1/2 minutes but not for long. A much fuller sound 10 1/2 minutes in and the guitar starts to light it up. Syd is amazing on this recording with his acid drenched freak outs. It settles back after 11 1/2 minutes. The guitar comes to the fore again before 13 minutes then it settles a minute later. It kicks in hard before 16 minutes.

"Nick's Boogie" opens with the drums beating in a dark atmosphere as the guitar expressions come and go. Love Syd's playing. It settles into a haunting soundscape around 7 minutes in. The guitar is insane 9 1/2 minutes in as Syd takes the spotlight. The drums with that dark atmosphere from the intro are back to end it.

I absolutely loved this. For me it means so much to hear this side of the band back in 1966/67 because this is how they were on stage back then. It would have been amazing to have been there.

Natasha Ashton: Pets Make Us Better

Recently, the journal of Pediatrics published a study showing that children who live in a home with a pet before they are one year old are likely to be healthier than children without four-legged siblings.

As mother to a 5-year-old son, Benjamin, and "fur mom" to an 8-year-old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Wellington, news of this small study was, in a word, thrilling. Not least of which because news that, you know -- scientifically speaking, we've provided our son with the best environment for a healthy childhood, is always to be celebrated. (It helps to counteract all the times we worry endlessly that we're not doing everything else right!)

But my delight goes a little further still. Yes, whether physically, emotionally or something in between, pets make us better. We've known it in our hearts for years, and scientific researchers are doing their part to put empirical evidence behind our gut feelings. But it's even more exciting than that. Researchers, from every spectrum of science, are connecting pets, health and medicine in ways that are simply remarkable.

Earlier this year, Petplan paid nearly $20,000 in pet health insurance claims for Plucky, an 8-year-old Greyhound who needed a bone marrow transplant to treat his leukemia. Available at only a few university veterinary facilities around the country, Plucky and his "mom" traveled from the suburbs of Philadelphia to Raleigh, N.C., to undergo this tremendous treatment at N.C. State. Of course, bone marrow transplants have been common enough in human medicine for several years now, but recent advances have started to make this treatment available, albeit not widely, to our pets too -- with tremendous results. The ironic part? The science was originally developed in veterinary medicine before being refined and made commonplace in human medicine. Pets help make us better.

Two years ago, Heidi Jeter of Morris Animal Foundation wrote an article for fetch! magazine about a study funded by the Foundation's Canine Cancer Campaign. In her piece, she noted researchers were exploring treatments that could have benefits for both pets and people. What was most intriguing about Heidi's article to me was that Foundation-funded study was looking closely at a form of bone cancer that affects approximately 10,000 dogs each year, but also 1,000 children each year. And while 1,000 children suffering from any kind of cancer is 1,000 too many, it is, sadly, almost too few for researchers to be able to quickly to find a solution. Wonderfully, canine studies, like this one, have potential to help both our four- and two-legged kids. Pets help make our children better.

Ten years ago, my husband Chris and I sought treatment for our cat, Bodey, at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. For reasons unknown, Bodey had stopped eating and was gravely ill. Several weeks of tests and treatments and a $5,000 vet bill later, Bodey was back on track. At the time, we were MBA candidates at The Wharton School. Chris, a former Captain in the Royal Marines Commandoes, and I, the daughter of a Greek entrepreneur whose ventures serviced the shipping industry, had every intention of starting a Maritime Security company. But when Bodey got sick, our lives changed. Like any students, we were eternally strapped for cash. We had no idea how we were going to pay for her veterinary care, but we knew we had to do something. So we put the bill on our credit card and moved into a smaller, cheaper apartment so that we could pay it off. What's more, we promptly put our pre-conceived life plans to the side and set out to transform the state of pet insurance in America. And, thanks to Bodey, that's exactly what we're doing.

So given all that, when I read with great interest the amazing work physicians, veterinarians and researchers are doing to advance medicine, and how, even on a biological level, pets can have a positive impact on our lives, I smile a little more deeply than most. Because, unlike the researchers who cautiously posit, suggest and conclude, I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that pets make us better. I just hope that we can return the favor.

Real Estate Law ? Understanding Buyer's Agency and Subagency ...

Real estate law is not the easiest kind of law to understand. Whether you are buying or selling a home it is vital that you choose a legal professional to represent you who is able to meet the needs that you have. You have options for representation when it comes to property transactions. Once you understand your options in terms of agency relationships you will then be able to choose the one that is most fitting for you. The important thing is that you find a legal representative who will do everything in his power to ensure that your rights are protected, whether you are buying or selling a home.

One kind of agency relationship is known as buyer?s agency. If you are purchasing a house then you can hire an agent for yourself who will represent you and only you. This person is known as an exclusive buyer?s agent or representative. Real estate law in this case states that the buyer?s representative would owe you what is known as a fiduciary duty and would work in the best interests of you, the client.

If you wish you can choose to pay the buyer?s agent yourself or if you prefer you can ask the seller or the seller?s agent to see to it that your agent receives a share of the commission from the sale of the dwelling. This is up to you.

On the other hand if you are selling your house and decide to hire the services of an agent who will list it exclusively for you then you have hired an exclusive selling representative or agent who will owe duties of a fiduciary nature to you. In most cases you would see to it that the selling rep receives a commission when the sale closes.

Most selling representatives will agree to pay the buyer?s agent a percentage of the sales commission. Real estate law stipulates what the rights of both the buyer?s agent and the selling agent are. It is worth knowing though that if the selling representative finds a buyer then this agent is entitled to keep not just a portion of the commission but all of it.

In real estate law another agency relationship you may think about entering into is known as a subagency. When you buy a house the agent you may decide to work with may not actually be a representative or an agent but maybe what is known as a subagent of the seller. The subagent will represent the seller and the agent of the seller and will act in the best interests of those individuals.

If the agent you hire is a subagent then you can expect to be treated respectfully and honestly but you need to know that this person?s greatest loyalty is to the seller (s) and the seller?s agent. When you hire the right professional, you?ll have the advantage of real estate law knowledge on your side.

A professional knowledgeable in San Francisco real estate law?can give you a leg up in your next property transaction. Make sure you know all your rights:?http://www.morilaw.com.

New Orleans Becoming Powerhouse Professional Sports City

WGNO News

July 13, 2012

NEW ORLEANS?

Friday afternoon, it wasn't hard to find people at restaurant tables around the city toasting the new contract of Saints star quarterback Drew Brees.

"We are celebrating Drew. And thank you, Mr. Benson," Iris Farrar said while sitting with a group of her friends at Walk On's on Poydras Street, nearly in the shadow of the Superdome.

The group was thrilled that Brees would make $100 million over the next five years, bringing an end to a nail biter off season negotiation between the QB and the team.

"It's been nerve racking, knowing that he deserves it," said Stephanie Shepherd while sitting at a table at the business next door, Happy's.

But here's the part of the contract that some fans don't like to think about. Brees is guaranteed $60 million. So if he gets seriously hurt, the team would still be on the hook for gobs of money.

"But we're talking if. And we know in New Orleans, if 'if' was a fifth, I would be drunk right now," joked Prentiss Tate.

"You can't really worry about that. It's sports. It's athletics. People blow out knees walking across the street," added Vic Suane.

Perhaps the biggest lesson for sports fans in general in the city is still sinking in. With the Saints enjoying their most success and popularity ever, and with the Hornets recently drafting two of the highest profile players in the NBA draft, sports fans could have many years of nail-biter off seasons ahead. It's just part of what happens in big sports towns.

"It's something we're going to have to get used to as a city. We are becoming a big sports market in my opinion with the Saints and the Hornets," said Suane.

Omrom MEMS thermal sensor tells you how hot your pocket is

Is that tasty baked snack still too hot to eat? Omron's D6T contactless infrared thermal sensor should take the guesswork out of it and help to avoid future cases of burny-mouth. Hook it up to a phone, point it at food or drink, and it'll display heat levels on-screen. Aside from snack safety, the device is also intended as a general presence sensor. The thermal detection negates the need for motion tracking and allows for additional features, such as power saving (switching off lights etc.) when people aren't around. Want to see it in action? There's a video generating heat right after the break.

From LibraryCloud Wiki

Barbara Rose Brooker has written an intimate novel that could mostly get lucky and people of the age. The interesting thing is that her lovers are inside their 70s. They hold the usual struggles Cialis while using dynamics of relationships, but they bring a whole lot more baggage from other relationships in addition to health concerns and end of life issues. The tendency with the public would be to want to see people within their 70s as beyond romance and relationship issues. As Baby Boomers age to their 60s, more and much more of the public are learning to determine elderly people the best way Barbara Rose Brooker portrays them.

The protagonists are Anny and Marv. Each is a veteran internet dater and so they meet through JDate. Anny violates all the rules of internet dating safety by meeting him with a bar and after that getting into his car and going to his place about the first date. He begins Cialis kissing her and, not surprisingly, asks for sex right off of the bat. She negotiates this mine field and happens safely, reaching the conclusion that Marv Cialis isn't for her.

"Obviously, Marv's not relationship material. He's into image, money - Cialis never to mention he's still for each other along with his ex-wife. He's a cliche, living on his past glamour. Anyway, I prefer professorial types. And haven't I needed enough with emotionally unavailable men? Relationships which are nowhere? Am I once more attracted to your man I can't like?" (p. 7)

We hear many times that Marv is emotionally unavailable. When he is after sex, he could be charming and attentive. After sex, there is no emotional warmth left because he wants the woman to hurry away and make certain to look at everything she brought with her. He also lies about his involvement with other women, denying that they is entangled with his ex-wife even though her watch is located as part of his bed and denying he is still participating in JDate despite the actual fact that Anny can go on JDate and tell that he is immediately trying to find other women soon after they had sex together.

Needless to say, Anny includes a torrid affair with Marv and experiences emotional conflict the years they may be together. She writes a column and begins to use Marv as material. She writes "a compilation of columns about an emotionally unavailable, shallow seventy-five-year-old man who cannot face age Cialis and is also always around the prowl for the young, gorgeous,, and ideal woman, who'll lead him to feel young and powerful." (p. 13) Her desire to end the relationship with Marv conflicts together with her wish to use him for material, on her behalf column becomes an incredible success as an outcome of her series on Marv and he or she needs him for more material.

This novel needs to be read. It is written by a woman in her own 70s with relation to a couple inside their 70s. It handles issues that Baby Boomers are starting to confront. Yes, people in their 70s are using online dating quite successfully. Yes, people of their 70s can be sexually active and remain searching for satisfying relationships. Healthy people inside their 70s are living life at full stride and not necessarily winding down. Barbara Rose Brooker's picture of life for folks of their 70s Cialis is needed in our graying society.

London raises bar on greening the Games

LONDON (Reuters) - A reed warbler sings from her nest, well hidden along the banks of a river that winds through a London park.

But this is not just any urban refuge - it's the Olympic Park, in a once derelict and contaminated area of east London populated by industrial buildings and neglected waterways.

And in just a few weeks' time, millions will watch the greatest Games on Earth in the warbler's backyard.

More than 200 hectares of land have been razed and redeveloped for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and 45 of those have been given over to creating new wildlife habitats for a variety of fauna - including kingfishers, bats, otters and grass snakes - while much of the rest has been left as parkland.

The urban park project is one of Europe's biggest in 150 years, according to the Olympic Development Authority (ODA) and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), and is part of ODA's efforts to keep its promise to make the Games the greenest to date.

Thousands of semi-mature trees were planted - aspen, crack willow, holm oak and silver birch - as were hundreds of thousands of wetland plants and other species, and more than 10 hectares of annual and perennial meadows.

An independent commission appointed to review the results, the first commission of its kind, says the outcome has been impressive when compared to previous hosts Beijing, Athens and Sydney, though not everything has worked.

"You only win a gold medal by being better than everyone else," said Shaun McCarthy, chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, but added: "I can very confidently say that this is the new high-water mark."

Simon Lewis, a campaigner at environmental group WWF UK, agreed London would provide a sustainability blueprint for Olympic Games for years to come.

But he also said progress on putting concern for the environment at the heart of the Olympic movement has been slow.

"It is evolutionary rather than revolutionary," Lewis told Reuters.

TARGETS

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) encourages host cities to address how they will handle the environmental impact of the Games in their planning, but does not insist on targets - Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 all had environmental plans whose ambition varied widely.

"London 2012 embedded sustainability in its planning from the start," said Emmanuelle Moreau, an IOC spokesman.

The ODA matched or beat most of its sustainable development targets, such as those for carbon emissions, waste and energy efficiency, the independent commission said in a June report.

One target promised a 50 percent reduction in carbon emissions from construction in the Olympic Park compared to levels set out in 2006 building regulations.

Others called for permanent buildings to be at least 15 percent more energy efficient, and for at least 90 percent of demolition waste to be reused or recycled.

Some 2 million tonnes of the area's soil was cleaned on site to remove contaminates such as oil, petrol, tar, arsenic and lead, while London's Velodrome is twice as energy-efficient as it needed to be.

It used half the materials used to build the one in Beijing and also came in comfortably under budget, evidence that greener projects do not need to come with a higher price tag, said McCarthy.

"For me treating sustainability like some sort of premium product, like a pair of designer jeans, is the completely wrong way to look at it," McCarthy added.

Many of the venues, bridges and structures to accommodate an expected 11 million visitors to the London Games can be disassembled, downsized and relocated afterwards.

The IOC's Moreau said a commitment to sustainable development, which gives equal weight to economic growth, the environment and social issues, will continue to be a key requirement in selecting host cities in future.

Rio is already working on ways to cut traffic congestion and reduce emissions ahead of the 2016 Games, and its sustainability team has been in contact with London.

But environmentalists say the IOC should set higher standards and require all future host cities to take on measurable targets. Until that happens, London - they say - is likely to remain the green benchmark by default.

"There is absolutely no reason why the IOC shouldn't be demanding the highest possible standards," McCarthy said.

NOT ALL SUCCESS

London's efforts haven't all been successful.

The organisers failed to generate 20 percent of the park's energy needs from renewable sources after planners pulled the plug on a large wind turbine and opted for a combined heat-and-power plant fuelled by natural gas instead.

But they still managed to meet the overall 50 percent emissions reduction goal by agreeing to help fund the London Mayor's low-carbon scheme for schools and homes in the communities.

However, the WWF UK's Lewis said London organisers should have done a better job selecting their "sustainability" partners.

"Some of the Olympic sponsors have not used the Games to create a positive change for sustainability and therefore they are not adding to the legacy, they are not helping the Games be greener," he said.

WWF reckons a good Olympic partner should be a progressive business that shows green leadership in their sector and that breaks new ground in reducing the impact of the Games while applying sustainability pledges to their business afterwards.

Lewis cited EDF Energy and oil giant BP as examples of companies that could have done more.

"EDF and BP are sticking with old and problematic approaches to energy provision and resisting a safer, cleaner and more affordable energy future," he wrote in a blog in April. "They are dragging their heels at the back of the race to tackle climate change."

Sheila Williams, a spokeswoman for BP, denied the company was not providing leadership. She pointed to BP plans to offset the carbon footprints of all ticketed spectators' travel to the Games, which it has estimated at around 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, as an example of a BP initiative.

The company is also providing biofuels and cleaner engine oils to be used in the more than 5,000 official vehicles earmarked for the Games, she said.

Michael Stuart, an EDF Energy spokesman, conceded his company was unable to deliver a promised low-carbon fuel for the Olympic torch in time for London, but said it had successfully developed the fuel - derived from elephant grass - and that it would be available for future Games.

"Without the inspiration of the Games, this fuel would not have been developed," Stuart said in an email.

EDF is also installing real-time energy monitoring technology to help control and reduce energy use at Olympic venues, he added.

LEGACY

Ultimately, London's success will be judged on its ability to deliver a lasting environmental legacy - decades from now, the organisers hope to see a permanent improvement to the area around the venues.

Once the Games are over in mid-August, the Olympic facilities will be turned over to the non-profit London Legacy Development Corp, renamed the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and opened to the public in phases from the summer of 2013.

David Stubbs, LOCOG's head of sustainability and himself an avid bird watcher, said a variety of birds had been observed over the last couple of seasons since the new parklands were planted, including sand martins, grey wagtails, linnets and kestrels.

In the winter, a flock of some 50 teals took up residence, and the river corridor has also attracted cormorants, herons, little grebes, mute swans and coots, Stubbs said.

More than 500 bird boxes, 150 bat boxes and artificial dens for otters have been installed in the park that officials hope will see regular use.

Kim Olliver, an ecologist and environment manager with the ODA, said she hoped visitors and athletes would take time out from the excitement of the sporting events to relax by the river and listen to the reed warblers.

"They might see a kestrel hovering over," she said.
