Americans on trial: a convenient distraction for Egypt's rulers?

The trial of 16 Americans and 27 other democracy workers opened today in Egypt in a case that has riveted the Egyptian public and deflected their frustrations onto foreigners.

In a case that has become an international drama, the trial of 16 Americans and 27 other democracy workers opened today in a rowdy courtroom in Egypt.

The workers are charged with operating nongovernmental organizations without a license and receiving foreign funding illegally. US lawmakers call the case a politically motivated crackdown on rights and democracy groups in Egypt and have threatened to cut off US aid to Egypt ??about $1.5 billion annually ??if it continues.

But to much of the Egyptian public, it is a sensational case of foreign governments using these organizations to destabilize and control Egypt. State media has whipped up such nationalist sentiments,?distracting some Egyptians from the slow pace of the regime's democratic reforms and directing anger outward.

"These foreign agents are working to destroy Egypt," says mechanic and taxi driver Abdel Rahman. "They are the cause of all the negative events of the last year ? America is using its money to weaken Egypt. If the court does not convict them, we Egyptians will find them and kill them."

Though 16 Americans are charged, only seven are in Egypt and none of them appeared in court today. All seven are banned from leaving Egypt, and some of them have taken refuge in the US embassy.

The 13 Egyptians who showed up to the chaotic hearing were held in a cage during the proceedings, as is customary in Egypt. All denied the charges against them, and were released without bail until the next hearing in April. Also absent from the proceedings were the Germans, Jordanians, Serbs, and Palestinians who are also charged.

Seeking 'espionage' sentences

Lawyers who volunteered against the civil society workers demanded they be sentenced to jail for "espionage," saying they had worked with the CIA, and demanded the accused pay punitive damages for the harm they had supposedly caused Egypt.?

Four of the five organizations involved are American. Two of them, the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), are loosely associated with the US political parties and have strong allies in Congress. They ran training for political parties in Egypt and observed elections.

Both IRI and NDI applied for registration with the Egyptian government before the revolution that overthrew former President Hosni Mubarak. The registration was a requirement under a Mubarak-era law?intended to restrict the activities of civil society organizations working for human rights and democracy.

The groups' applications were never approved, but neither were they denied, leaving them in legal limbo. But they had worked in Egypt for years, and officials from both organizations say they were in contact with the authorities about their activities, and were transparent. Both groups were certified by a government entity to monitor parliamentary elections.

Though Egypt always opposed direct US funding to these groups because Egyptian officials preferred to control the money themselves, the US drastically increased funding for the groups after a popular revolt overthrew Mubarak, gambling that Egypt's temporary military leaders would welcome assistance in Egypt's transition to democracy.

More hostile than Mubarak

Instead, they were even more hostile than Mubarak. State media launched a smear campaign against the groups last year. A Mubarak-era minister seen by US officials as the driving force behind the prosecutions initiated an investigation of the groups that led to raids on their offices in December, during which security forces confiscated equipment, documents, and cash.

In a press conference this month, the investigating judges laid out evidence in the case that seemed aimed at portraying the accused as foreign spies who threatened Egypt's national security.

Newest in fashion boots Review - DIY Home Improvement Tips to ...

This is for you the latest article on in fashion boots remark.

By default, most of the computers, that are running under Windows XP, are not having set a password for the hidden Administrator account, so you may try to access it by in fashion bootsing windows in the safe mode. Mid calf in fashion boots are becoming increasingly popular, because they look great on nearly any body type. If you right click on the file winsock.dll in Windows 98 C Windowswinsock.dll , you will see BSD Socket API for Windows in the Properties gt Version window however, the BSD is not seen in newer Windows systems in the version information window of winsock.

3. Do not set very large file size images as your wallpaper. Do not keep a wallpaper at all if your PC is low on RAM less than 64 MB .

4. Do not clutter your Desktop with a lot of shortcuts. I am not sure if it would be possible to make this harvesting illegal or if it could be policed if it were illegal, but if this were to be stopped it would go a long way to halting the spread of spam emails.

The way Windows deals with spam is absolutely useless and if spam gets into the in box and you tell Windows, with three clicks, to add it to your spam list, it disappears from the in box and goes into the spam box, meaning that you have to delete it again and still not be sure that it has been given the coup de grace.

A programme called spam fighter is quite good at tackling both the short term as well as the long term problems with spam. It asks you if you just want to delete or if you want to add it to your banned list or your good list or to send it to them if it is hard core, all with one click, as they do collect spam that its customers say is hard core spam and work world wide to attempt to verify it as hard core and help close down the sites that abuse the system. The problem is that Windows does not like spam fighter and throws its icon out of Outlook Express and makes it difficult to get it back for the ordinary user. I think the programme does interfere with Outlook Express, but rather than fix the problem they in fashion boots it out.

Good minded people send lists to all their friends around the world and ask them to send the list to all they know, to warn them about a so called virus being spread. I do wonder if the person who started the whole thing going is waiting to harvest the gathered list of hundreds of emails.

Until Windows, Macintosh and all the other providers get together and make a concerted attack on spam in all its variations, it will carry on breeding and propagating until the once wonderful experience of surfing the net becomes a nightmare that could, in time, destroy the internet or make it impossible for the average user to navigate to every spam laden site on the World Wide Web.

UN chief congratulates Yemen?s new president

UN Secretary General, Ban?Ki-moon today congratulated Yemen?s new President Abbed Rabbo Mansour al-Hadi after he took his oath of office in parliament.

Ban told Mr. Hadi in a telephone call that the overwhelming turnout of voters, including young people who came out in large numbers to cast their ballots on Tuesday, was a clear indication of the country?s support for his leadership and for the peaceful transition.

In a summary of the telephone conversation released by his spokesperson, the Secretary-General said he was aware that Yemen was facing many difficult challenges, but he was confident the country could move forward.

He thanked Hadi for his appreciation of the work of the United Nations, led by the Secretary-General?s Special Adviser on Yemen, Jamal Benomar, in support of the political transition.

Ban said he was committed to strengthening the UN presence and engagement in Yemen, working closely with regional and international partners to increase support.

Warring factions in Yemen signed an agreement in November on a transitional settlement under which former president Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed to hand over power to Hadi, the then vice president, who was the sole candidate in Tuesday?s presidential election.

Hadi replaced Ali Abdullah Saleh, who resigned after months of protest.

Flip Your Mattress, Flip Your Mind | Paula Renaye

Limiting Beliefs. We?ve all got them, but most of the time we don?t even realize it. We also don?t realize how much they control us. But really, why would we? We?ve operated from those beliefs our whole lives?they?re our version of normal.

A few weeks ago, a friend invited me to go for a hike on the ?mountains? here in Hot Springs. It was a beautiful day and it seemed like a fun thing to do now that I am getting out in the world. A year ago, I?d managed to survive Peru at 12,000 feet without dying and I?d lived in the Rockies,? so I figured a little ?hill? in Arkansas at basically sea level would be no big deal.

Well, it was a good theory, but it was really wrong.

I?ve never been much of a hiker, although I did get coerced into a couple of backpack trips through the Rockies back when I was in my twenties?nearly died once there too. As a teenager, I ran track for a couple of years. I was fast out of the gate on sprints and won lots of ribbons, but I couldn?t make it around the track one time even at a trot. Obviously, endurance has never been my thing, and spending sixteen-hours-a-day for the last year in front of my computer hasn?t enhanced that ability. So, trying to keep up?even for a few minutes?with a long distance runner was not only dumb, it was suicidal.

During that near-death-experience, I recalled why I had never wanted to do such things in the first place. It seemed to me if I was going to expend that kind of energy?and risk having my heart explode?I ought to have something tangible to show for it, such as clean stalls in the barn, a nice stack of hay, a new rock retaining wall or the house painted. Work was my definition of exercise.

Well, several years ago a good friend of mine was on health kick and wanted to walk. I was not keen on the idea for the above-mentioned reasons, but I agreed, figuring a little fresh air couldn?t hurt.

I had a good place to walk where I lived so she came to my house. When she arrived, I asked her if she?d mind helping me flip my mattress. She said sure, but asked if I wanted to do it before we went for the walk or after.

?Oh, better do it now,? I said without hesitation. ?Afterward we?ll be tired and won?t feel like doing anything.?

As the words left my mouth, a light bulb went on in my head. I realized that I had just uncovered a serious limiting belief?one I?d had my whole life. I believed that exercise made me feel bad!?

Wow! No wonder I never wanted to do anything that could be labeled ?exercise.? Why would I want to do something I believed was going to make me feel worse?

I don?t know when or how I came up with that belief?and it doesn?t matter. What matters is that I recognized the automatic programming for what it was and knew I could change the belief if I wanted to.

So, I laughed at myself and shared my insights with my friend. Then I reworded the belief and tried my response again. ?Let?s wait until we get back, because after our walk we?ll feel great and have more energy than we know what to do with.?

Very different way of viewing things! And, operating on that belief system would produce radically different choices and create different outcomes.

Lucky for me I also have helpful beliefs about food and health?not to mention good genes?that have kept me in reasonably good shape in spite of shunning exercise. I?d been doing a little walking and a little yoga, but that hike up the mountain was a wake-up call. I decided right then and there that I wanted to get myself in really great shape. I was going to get myself to where I could hike up there easily and I was going to have fun doing it.

That one small part of the mountain has become my personal training ground. I time myself up the steepest part that almost did me in and then I keep going all the way to the top to the lookout tower.

I?m not quite ready to race mountain goats, but I am amazed at how fast my body has adapted. Sometimes, when I push myself to go up the steep part twice, I do a little ?Rocky? dance when I make it up the second time. The best part of the whole thing is that I feel great! I love the changes in my body as I get it in better shape and I love the changes in my mind too.

So, what are your limiting beliefs? What do you just automatically say as ?fact? that may just be an opinion? What offhand comments do you make without really hearing or thinking about them?

Like my mattress flipping example, you may find your clues in common every day things. A lot of limiting beliefs can show up when you talk about food, eating, sleeping, work, etc. Start listening to what you say and you may be amazed at what you discover?and how simple it can be to make changes because of it.

When you find a limiting belief?and you will?just do what I did. Flip it around, right then and there, say the new empowering belief out loud and start making it work for you!

Amounts, Character, and Philosophy (Part 2)

Simply one want to know , we talked about amounts in character as well as their possible philosophical significance. Within this part we consider another unusual facets of amounts.

Zero and Infinity

Unlike other real amounts zero and infinity have no quantitative attribute. As it happens they aren?t amounts although specialised mathematicians do consider zero like a finite number. The statement which i have $ 5 makes sense but ?I have zero dollars? doesn?t. If requested to I?m able to show 5 dollars but cannot show the zero. So zero is simply a concept like infinity. The idea of a factor isn?t the one thing itself only an effort to explain what it?s.

Zero and infinity figure conspicuously in philosophy, particularly in Eastern philosophies. They?re considered two sides of the identical gold coin, much like all pairs of opposites. They?re interconnected such as the two finishes of the infinite spiral as well as found in one another. We can?t enter in the particulars of those philosophical arguments here and just point out that the best The truth is referred to as ?smaller compared to littlest and bigger compared to largest? (Vedanta) and ?nothing is everything? (Tao).

Irrational and Transcendental Amounts

Amounts that can?t be expressed like a ratio of two integers are known as irrational. I guess they?re known as irrational due to the fact that the only real rational method of indicating several is when it comes to two other whole amounts. Their decimal expansions don?t terminate nor become periodic. The renowned irrational number may be the square cause of two. These amounts are, obviously, indeterminate, although geometrically you can get the need for square cause of two by calculating the hypotenuse of the right-position triangular with height and base comparable to one. However, once we shall see later, it earns one other issue ? the mistake of measurement.

As you can guess in the title itself, the phrase transcendental amounts is a touch complicated. (They are amounts that aren?t roots of integer polynomials so they aren?t algebraic amounts associated with a degree.) All transcendental amounts are irrational. Frankly I don?t understand what they transcend apart from a simple definition! Anyway, two are most typical. The first is connected with circle and it is denoted through the Greek letter Pi another is denoted by e for exponential and it is connected with logarithm. Another such number may be the so-known as golden ratio denoted through the Greek letter Phi, that is apparently preferred by character and may be tracked even just in human body. Architectures by using this ratio are visually more pleasing. Additionally, it associated with Fibonacci sequence talked about simply 1 want to know ,.

Approximations and Errors

Because the values of irrational and transcendental amounts can?t be determined precisely, one needs to turn to approximation. Any approximation has some natural error. Which means that using these amounts won?t yield a distinctive result. The circumference or even the section of a circle can?t be determined precisely since it involves multiplication by Pi. The exponential development of any variable quantity can?t be calculated exactly due to using e. This is also true for implementing the golden ratio. As we use geometrical techniques of identifying the values from the square cause of two or even the circumference of the circle, the approximation error means measurement error which could not be completely removed.

This takes us to that which was pointed out about zero. Regardless of what we all do we never can reach zero. This goes for infinity. This bears an example towards the spiritual goal of reaching the best Reality. If the goal is nirvana, it can?t be achieved while living. It?s possible to only make an effort to get as near as you possibly can and also the nearest possible approach is known as enlightenment.

iPad owners: Trending 'older,' wealthier for now

The NPD Group

By Suzanne Choney

iPad owners "tend to be older and have more money," according to a study from The NPD Group. But that's changing as the idea of a tablet becomes more mainstream.

The research firm says that more than 40 percent of iPad owners have a household income of $100,000 and more, compared to 26 percent of non-iPad owners. Age-wise, about two-thirds are 34 and older; the remainder are under age 34.

But with the iPad itself not quite two years old, and with more tablets on the market, the demographics of tablet ownership are changing.

"More recent tablet owners make less money and are younger than the early adopters, with buyers at the end of 2011 being 50 percent more likely to have an income under $45,000, and 33 percent more likely to be under 34 years of age," NPD said in a new study, "Tablet Adoption and Insights Report." The report is based on a survey of more than 1,114 consumers in December.

The tablet market itself is "beginning to take on a new role,? said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD, in a press release.

?We are seeing some of the tasks traditionally performed on devices, such as PCs, now being performed on the tablet. In fact, all five of the top activities (email, Web surfing, game-playing, social networking and online shopping) shifted towards the tablet between early and late 2011."

The NPD Group

That doesn't mean consumers are shifting away from PCs, Baker said. "Only 10 percent of tablet owners have decided they don?t need a PC notebook that they were once considering." And among non-tablet owners, 26 percent "say they are likely to buy a notebook in the next year, while just 18 percent say they will purchase a tablet."

Adventure Holidays:Sports Adventure Holidays ? Article Squadron

?Single parent supplements,? ?couples only holidays,? and the hotelier?s odd tyrannical assumption that every family is a ?couple with two children? (under 12s only, thank you very much); they?ve long been the bane of my yearly get-away. It would seem that a single parent with too many children but some means (I run my own business from home) somehow has great difficulty in selecting, nay finding, a holiday that can accommodate single parent and family without breaking the bank or worse. I have tried everything that offers easier rooming arrangements, from camping (think less great out doors and more cramped time in a tent) to villas (which once you?ve cooked dinner, done the washing up and chased three children around the pool all day, doesn?t feel quite so removed from any other weekend at home).

Often lone travellers are more determined so are perfectly suited to trekking holidays such as the Inca trail. The Inca trail is a world famous trek. The traditional route to Machu Picchu is only 33km long but those 33km take 4 days of trekking spanning a journey through cloud forests, and over amazingly beautiful peaks highlighted by seeing ancient ruins built over 500 years ago as you make your way to the lost city of the Incas.

The Machu Picchu was initially thought of as just a few rural buildings when it was discovered, but due to its scale and amazing crafting the location was likely a site of importance. There are many theories on the Machu Picchu?s purpose but when you see it for yourself you will be able to ponder your own theories.

BlackBerry knocked again as another US agency opts for the iPhone (Digital Trends)

blackberry-os7-handsets-august-2011We don?t know exactly what the former Research In Motion co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie have been doing since they stepped down from the top job last month, but if they want to keep their stress levels down, it?s probably wiser for them to take regular strolls in the local park than spend too much time reading the news.

According to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday, the US government?s main procurement agency, the General Services Administration (GSA), will begin issuing its employees with iPhones alongside Blackberry devices.

GSA spokesperson Deborah Ruiz told Bloomberg that any of its more than 12,000 employees will be able to ask for Apple or Android devices if the phones have applications that will allow them to work more efficiently.

RIM says it still has more than one million government customers though with this latest announcement from the GSA, the company?s new CEO Thorsten Heins will be more than a little concerned, especially as the switch seems to be part of a growing trend.

Last week, for example, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ? a government agency concerned with research into weather, oceans and fisheries ? said that starting in May it would begin giving its workers iPhones, replacing the currently used BlackBerry devices.

A couple of days before that, oil giant Halliburton said it had also made the decision to move away from RIM?s handsets in favor of those made by other market leaders. Credit Suisse, Barclays Capital and Standard Chartered have also made similar announcements.

While sales of BlackBerry handsets are actually doing pretty well in emerging markets, they fell a painful 45 percent in the US in the last quarter. If more US businesses follow in the footsteps of Halliburton and others, things will only get worse for RIM in the US market.

RIM has suffered recently in the face of tough competition from Apple?s iPhone and devices powered by Google?s Android OS. It?s also had major problems trying to get consumers interested in its PlayBook tablet and angered many of its BlackBerry customers last October when it took three days to fix a service outage.

It seems that the company?s future success rests largely on its next-generation of phones running the BlackBerry 10 operating system, expected later this year. Between now and then, RIM executives will need to find a way to stem the tide of businesses switching to alternative mobile devices.

The Correlation Between Workplace Safety And Profit Generation ...

According to some figures recently released, an excess of 40 million workers in the United States required emergency medical assistance for injuries incurred in the workplace. Indeed, there seems to be a plethora of workplace concerns arising due to this mind-boggling figure, even as many companies profess to care more about workplace safety than ever before. In recent years, so many companies have had to bear culpability for injuries that occurred in a place of business. There is a relationship that exists between workplace safety and profitability.

Everybody in business, particularly those companies that are affiliated with industrial manufacturing seek constant and consistent improvement in their processes and the products themselves. They realize that their profits are directly related to the ways and means by which they produce their products. So intense is the chase for greater sales and profitability that a lot of companies in America are now treating workplace safety like the proverbial red-headed stepchild.

One cannot help but be dumbfounded by the staggering costs of operating a sizeable manufacturing facility in America. The effect of workplace injuries is crippling in more ways than one ? it also cripples the budget of a company and their productivity. By being detail-oriented and focused on preventative measures, a lot of these injuries can be precluded. It is, after all, possible to prevent many workplace injuries. The safety and spick-and-span condition of a workplace is probably the best possible way a company can prevent injuries from occurring, though the factors in avoiding injurious accidents are not limited to this. Workers are also culpable for their own safety at the end of the day.

Workplace injuries place a significant burden on health care providers and insurance companies. As companies continue to pay higher premiums for employee health care, one of the only means available for cost recovery is to increase the prices of the goods they produce. As a result, the onus is solely on the consumer, and gives companies carte blanche to ignore the root and underlying causes of workplace injuries. The focus here seems to be on maintaining a healthy relationship with shareholders, and not necessarily on maintaining a healthy workforce.

It is quite fascinating and in a way disconcerting that there are more jobs than ever before, especially industrial jobs, outsourced to foreign countries. There are actually a few reasons why this is so even up to now. By inexpensively acquiring labor from mostly third world countries, American companies are thus able to significantly cut down on the costs of operation, costing a mere percentage of what they would normally be paying for domestic assistance. The foreign governments, on the other hand, are all too happy to invest, and as a result, giddily accommodate the interest invested by corporate America. Invariably, workplace safety is compromised, thus making such a deal appear Faustian in nature.

If companies want to be profitable in the long term, they need to reexamine their approach to workplace safety and the health of their workers. The number of companies sending American jobs to other nations to save money through cheap labor and a relaxed labor code is outstanding. American companies can be both profitable and safety conscious. That is why every American company owner must, in our esteemed opinion, make safety education a priority and work on preempting injuries catastrophic and minor alike. To put a twist on an old business truism; safe workers are contented workers and contented workers produce better results.

Making a well informed HON chairs decision has never been more important to you and your health.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Days after blocking a U.S.-backed peace plan at the U.N., senior Russian officials pushed for reforms Tuesday during an emergency meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, promoting a settlement to end the uprising without removing him from power.

Thousands of flag-waving government supporters cheered the Russians in the Syrian capital of Damascus, while to the north, Assad's forces pounded the opposition city of Homs ? underscoring the sharp divisions propelling the country toward civil war.

The violence has led to the most severe international isolation in more than four decades of Assad family rule, with country after country calling home their envoys.

France, Italy, Spain and Belgium pulled their ambassadors from Damascus, as did six Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia. Germany, whose envoy left the country this month, said he would not be replaced. The moves came a day after the U.S. closed its embassy in Syria and Britain recalled its ambassador.

Turkey, once a strong Assad supporter and now one of his most vocal critics, added its voice to the international condemnation, with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan saying his country cannot remain silent about massacres in Syria. He said Turkey would "launch a new initiative with countries that stand by the Syrian people instead of the regime."

His comments reflect a growing movement by the U.S., Europe and countries in the region to organize a coalition of nations to back Syria's opposition, though what kind of support remains unclear. Over the weekend, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "friends of democratic Syria" to unite and rally against Assad's regime.

On Tuesday, the Obama administration suggested it might provide humanitarian aid to the Syrian people, but did not specify how or to whom.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov flew into Damascus on Tuesday, accompanied by his foreign security chief, to try to boost a plan that would keep Assad in power, even though many prominent members of the opposition reject that entirely.

"It's clear that efforts to stop the violence should be accompanied by the beginning of dialogue among the political forces," Lavrov said, according to the Russian news agency ITAR-Tass. "Today we received confirmation of the readiness of the president of Syria for this work."

The visit was also a sign that Moscow wanted to get a firsthand assessment of the situation on the ground in Syria ? and the raucous welcome the diplomats received from thousands of regime supporters appeared aimed at showing that Assad's grip is firm, at least in Damascus.

Syria has been a key Russian ally since Soviet times, and Moscow remains a major arms supplier to Damascus even as Assad unleashes his forces to crush not only peaceful protesters, but army defectors who are fighting the regime.

The U.N. estimates the government crackdown has killed more than 5,400 people since March, making Syria's conflict one of the deadliest of the Arab Spring. Hundreds more are believed to have died since the U.N. released that figure in January, but the chaos in the country has made it impossible for the world body to update its figures.

Tuesday's visit by Lavrov and intelligence chief Mikhail Fradkov was evidence that Russia does not want to be seen as giving Assad a free hand to crush his opponents in the wake of Saturday's veto at the U.N. Security Council.

Both Russia and China blocked a Western- and Arab-backed resolution supporting calls for Assad to hand over some powers as a way to defuse the 11-month-old crisis.

Russia has opposed any U.N. call that could be interpreted as advocating military intervention or regime change. Russia and China also used their veto powers in October to block an attempt to condemn the violence in Syria.

On Tuesday, Moscow delivered its own message to Syria, calling on all sides to hold a meaningful dialogue.

"Necessary reforms must be implemented in order to address legitimate demands of the people striving for a better life," Lavrov told Assad, according to ITAR-Tass."

Assad replied that Syria is determined to hold a national dialogue with the opposition and independent figures, saying his government was "ready to cooperate with any effort that boosts stability in Syria," according to the Syrian state news agency SANA.

Repeated efforts by the Arab League and Russia to broker talks have been rejected by the Syrian opposition, which refuses any negotiations while the crackdown continues. The opposition has also said Assad's proposed reforms, including a new constitution and eventual multiparty elections, are aimed at keeping his hold on power.

In Tuesday's talks, Assad told Lavrov that Russia's position has played "a key role in saving our motherland," according to ITAR-Tass.

As Lavrov's convoy snaked its way along Damascus' Mazzeh Boulevard, it was greeted by a sea of Assad supporters cheering the vetoes at the U.N.

"Thank you Russia and China," read one banner that had photos of Assad and the Russian president. Many stood in the rain carrying Syrian flags as well as the red, blue and white Russian banner.

"I am here to thank Russia for its stand in the face of the world conspiracy against Syria," said Manya Abbad, 45. "I wish the Arabs adopted similar stances."

The Assad regime says terrorists acting out a foreign conspiracy to destabilize the country are behind the uprising, not people seeking to transform the authoritarian regime.

But in the flashpoints of the conflict, witnesses, residents and human rights workers say Assad's forces are shelling and firing indiscriminately. On Tuesday, the troops renewed their assault on one of the main centers of the opposition, the city of Homs, with activists saying tanks were closing in on a restive neighborhood.

Despite the assault, members of the rebel Free Syrian Army pledged to protect the besieged Baba Amr neighborhood.

"We are just here to respond and defend the local residents from Assad's army snipers," said one fighter, according to Associated Press television footage.

Shielded in the corridors of a deserted building once occupied by Assad's forces, the rebels moved carefully from one position to another overlooking suspected sniper hide outs.

At a makeshift medical clinic, the dead were wrapped in white sheets and piled on a pickup truck outside. Doctors appeared overwhelmed by the number of wounded and the severity of their injuries.

"Can someone help, please!" wailed a man kneeling by a wounded relative on the floor, "Someone come and see him!"

Activists said at least 15 people were killed in violence around the country Tuesday.

Homs was the site of the deadliest assault of the uprising on Saturday, when activists reported more than 200 people were killed in an overnight bombardment hours before the U.N. vote. The government denied the deaths.

Syria has blocked access to trouble spots and prevented most independent reporting, making it nearly impossible to verify accounts from either side.

In Washington, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the U.S. was not considering arming opposition groups in Syria, despite calls from some U.S. lawmakers to consider such an option.

Carney said current deliberations inside the administration were focused on how the U.S. could provide humanitarian aid to the Syrian people and ratchet up pressure on the Syrian government.

U.S. senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman urged the U.S. to explore the prospect of arming opposition forces. "It's an option that now should be on the table," McCain said.

McCain conceded the situation in Syria was more complicated than in Libya, where opponents of Moammar Gadhafi quickly gained control of an eastern city, but he insisted it was necessary.

"I feel very strongly that what's happening in Syria is exactly what we got into Libya to stop Gadhafi from doing," said Lieberman. "The question is what do you do. One of the things is giving support to the Syrian Free Army."

Jacksonville Residents Consider HVAC Career Training - Genecast ...

Careers in the field of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC or HVAC/R) are on the rise. Across the country, the need for climate control remains a priority, and Jacksonville is no exception.

Located in a humid, subtropical climate, Jacksonville summers often see temperatures in the 90s, many times feeling like the 100s with extreme heat indices. Cold winter temperatures have been known to affect the area, with hard freezes overnight.

HVAC systems are used in both commercial and residential buildings and are comprised of a highly complex system of mechanical and electrical parts such as thermostats, pipes, motors and ducts. Individuals who would like to embark on an HVAC tech career in Jacksonville can choose to specialize in installation, maintenance or repair of these systems.

What do Jacksonville HVAC Techs Do?

HVAC technicians work year round installing and ensuring that systems are working properly. During the summer months, when heating systems are not in use, HVAC techs still maintain these systems through cleaning and necessary part replacement. During the winter months, HVAC techs maintain and repair cooling systems to prepare them for use when the hot air returns.

In addition to climate control, HVAC technicians are responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of commercial refrigeration systems. U.S. ocean fence aims to curb smuggling from Mexico (Reuters)

SAN DIEGO, California (Reuters) ? U.S. authorities are building a steel and concrete barrier 300 feet out into the Pacific Ocean south of San Diego to curb dangerous attempts by illegal immigrants and smugglers to slip through the breakers to California.

The new maritime fence is being built at a cost of $4.3 million at the point where the U.S.-Mexico border plunges into the ocean between San Diego and the industrial powerhouse of Tijuana, in northwest Mexico.

The new "surf fence" is a steel-and-concrete barrier up to 18 feet tall that replaces a rusted and uneven line of posts.

"It was falling apart, it was out of alignment, it looked like a bad set of teeth," said Customs and Border Protection spokesman Ralph DeSio.

"This is going to be much more aesthetically appealing to that area, but it also strengthens our abilities to prevent those dangerous smuggling attempts along that shoreline," he added.

Federal authorities in recent years have added fencing and Border Patrol agents along the southwest border with Mexico in a bid to stop illegal immigrant crossings and drug smuggling to the United States. Congress also mandated building a further 650 miles of fencing along the 2,000-mile border.

Recent attempts to slip north through the surf and inshore waters to Imperial Beach, south of San Diego, have included two smugglers nabbed with marijuana piled onto a surfboard in 2009, and a pair of wetsuit-clad illegal immigrants arrested last February with self-propelled underwater dive scooters.

Illegal immigrants from Mexico have also taken to the sea to swim around the existing rusted barrier and into Border Field State Park in southern California. One man drowned attempting the trip through the frigid waters last November.

The upgrade comes at a time when smugglers are also increasingly pushing further out sea in open-topped "panga" fishing boats to run illegal immigrants and tons of marijuana up the coast as far as the Los Angeles and Santa Barbara areas. There have been 14 incidents there since last October.

In a bid to make it more resilient to the pounding Pacific waves, the new barrier, which is due for completion in March, is coated with protectants inside and out, and is then being filled with concrete. It has an estimated life of up to 30 years, DeSio said.

The effort under way to ratchet up security at the beach, which includes a stretch of fencing that runs 900 feet inland, is raising some eyebrows in Tijuana.

Policeman Cesar Ochoa is struck by the transformation to Parque Amistad, or Friendship Park, just back from the beach, where families separated by the border would chat informally through the bars of the fence beside a historic monument. A double fence now walls off the area and prevents visitors from getting to within a few feet of each other.

"The only thing that remains from that time are the cement tables where people used to meet. There were Border Patrol agents watching over them ... but they let people interact," Ochoa said.

"After they started to increase surveillance because there were people who took advantage of those visits to slip into the United States illegally, which I suppose is why they cracked down on security," he added.

Local government employee Adriana Medina, 33, remembers families picnicking and playing ball and even partying in the park when she was growing up and is surprised by the upgrade that pushed "steel posts right into the sea."

"It looks like a jail," she told Reuters. "I think it's an overreaction."
